WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, August 17, 1972, page Il Basebali Enters Playof f Period When September is just around the cor- ner Ms time for baseball. playoffs and this season Whitby is strongly repre- sented in the Eastern Ontario Baseball Assoc. playoffs. Three Whitby clubs are in the Championship rounds in their s e r i e s , another is stili in the semi- finals while the Attersley Juniors have not yet begun playoff action. The K of C Tykes were the first club to gain a berth in the finals when they defeated Bowmanville, two straight, the Lasco Steelers swept two games from Lindsay in convincing fashion to win a spot in the finals. Both the Steelers and the K of C's will be meeting Cobourg clubs in series which begin this week. The Can- adian Tire Midgets are already battling it out for Championship honours with Port Hope. In just four short years Whitby has become a power in the East- ern Ontario Baseball Assoc. following formation of the Whitby Minor Baseball Assoc. in 1969. Basebali interest at a high 1t c hBaseball interest had dwindled in the County Town prior to the formation of the organization but the successful operation of the W. M. B. A. has to rank as one of the major minor sport achievements in the area. Apart f rom the five clubs which represent Nhitby in the E. O. B. A., four hundred boys are engaged in Tyke, Pee-Wee, Bantam, and T-Bal1 House Leagues and form the bulk of the boys regis tered with assoc. , and throughout the summer are involved in a well run programme which provides summertime recreation and fun for a large segment of the community youth. Mi CIgets The Canadian Tire Midgets advanced to the E.O. B. A. Finals against Port Hope taking their series with Ajax, two straight, the first a convincing 13-0 win at E. A. Fairman and the second by de - fault when Ajax was unable to field a team for the return game at Cedar Park in Ajax. In the opener which Whitby won handily, HaroldMoore came up with an- othersteady pitching chore in which he gave up only two hits, both singles. Throughout the game he was ahead of the batters and neyer in trouble. Dave Sorichetti continued his sparkling play at shor t for the Tiremen, and led the club at the plate with a double and a single, John Turner added two singles w h ile Robbie Craigen had a single. Their win by default put them in the fi- nals against P or t Hope, in a series which began Sunday in Whi tby. The firs t game at E. A. Fairman was a thriller with a finish that had everyone on their feet as John Turner laid down a perfect bunt to score Harold Moore from third to win the game 9-8. The game, an error filled affair saw.the Vhitby club come upwith ten miscues, five of them in the sixth inning which put Port Hope out in front'8-5, but this set the stage for the exciting finish. Pe r fe c t bu nt Wv I ns g ameHarold Moore started for the Canadian Tire club and gave way to John Turner in the fourth. Turner allowed three hits in the next three in- nings, and helped his cause by coming upwith three singles plus his perfectly executed bunt which won the game. It was Harold Moore who got the inning going for Whitby as he led,off with a single to the hole at second. Dave Sori- chetti worked Kevin Jiggins, who came in for Port Hope in the seventh, for a walk and meanwh ile Moore had advanced to third, and wi th none out it was only a mat ter of time before the winning run came in. Keith Powell started for Port Hope, Port Hope had an 8-5 lead in the s i x t h when they too caught the "Boot Disease" and started kicking the bail around handing 'Jhitby three unearned runsto tie it up. Dave Sorichetti sing- led for '.hitby early to give the locals a total of seven hits. Second game of the ser ies which promises to be a thriller was slated for Port Hope on Tues. , with a third game, if necessary back here at E. A. Fairman on Thurs. T he St celers Th e Lasco Steelers took the first game of their series with Lindsay 13-4, a nine run margin and picked up their second victory with the same spread, only this time the score was 12-3 in a game played at George St. Park in L ind- say. Steve Sarginson was on the mound for the Steelers and the Wvhitby left- hander came through wi th a splendid ef - fort in which he gave up 7 hits and had eight strikeouts. He pitched a steady game and was never in serious trouble atany time keeping ahead of the hitters ail the way to pick up the win. Abig second inning in which the Steel- ers pushedseven runs across gave them a lead which they increased with runs in the next four innings and the game was never in doubt as the Steelers played heads up baseball and came up w ith eigh t hits. Dave Wall with two singles and a double led the way, while Mike Rowley addedadoubleand a single. Tim rown c a me through w ith a pair of safeties whileKevin Roche added one. Reaching the finals, the Steelers were rewarded for a season of hard work. At the outset many fans didn't feel the club woul d come along as strong as they did. Zut they surprised a lot of people with a great shovving, the resul tof some fine pitching byDave Allen and Steve Sarginson and a fighting team spirit. Now they go into the E. O. ". A. finals against Cobourg in what should be a bang up ser ies. K of C' s The K of C Tykes almos t demalished Zowmanville 21-3 in the semi-final open and the second game followed the same pattern when the K of C won the second game, and the ser ies wi th a 17-1 in Mem- orial Park in Zowmanville on Friday. Mike W~ellIing was on the mound for the W/hitby cl|u b and the young south paw came through wi th a great pi tching chore s tr iking out ten and giving up only three hi ts in the abbrevi ated con tes t whi ch was cal led at the end of six because of dark- ness. Ken Jimmo and Zutch Galley led thehittersfor Whitby with three singles each, while John Wall, Mike Welling, Paul Heffer, each had a pair. Robbie Scero, Kevin McClelland, Larry Chi- zen, and Steven Parrott added singles. The K of C's were to enter the finals against Cobourg but dates have not yet been set. The Whi tby Legionaires opened their series with the Lindsay Moynes with a 13-1 victory, in which they shutout the visitors until the seventh inning. The Legionaires jumped into an early lead with a five run second inning and never looked back. Ian Gillis andDoug Shearer each with a double and a single led the Whitby hitters while Rick Kay, Tim Twining and John Heffer each had a pair of singles. Mark MacDonald had a double. Cam Murkar was on the mound for the Legionaires and was particularly sharp, holding the Moynes to two hits, striking out thirteen and walking only one. On Sat. the series shifted to Lind- say and the Legionaires showed a com- plete reversai of form coming up with their most listless display of the year in which they managed only three hits which produced a single run. Lindsay came up with five runs to take the vic- tory and square the series. Mark Mac- Donald started on the mound for Whitby but gave way to Dave McWhirter in the second. McWhirter pi tched well in re- lief but the silentbats of his mates failed to put any sting in the WNhitby attack. In a game called because of darkness theAttersley Tire Juniors defeated the Oshawa Legionaires 4-2. Greg Cairns pickedup the victory, as he held Osha- wa to 4 hits. His opponent Doug Stone allowed only two hits but the Legion- aires booted the ball badly coming up with five er ror s to help the Whitby cause. Dave Moore and Gary B orchuck w e r e the Whitby hitters. The Atters- ley's begin their playoffs in Kingston on Aug. 1Sth. Playoffs begin This week also marks the beginning of playoff action for the four hundred boys who are involved in the W. M. 3. A. Tyke, Pee-Wee, 3antam, and T-13all House Leagues.
