Page 2, Thursday, July 13, 1972, WHITBY FREE PRESS the tail A ci ass ic example can be made of the Lucien Motel issue on how the tax- p a y e r becomes disenchanted with the municipal politician - and why. The municipal council, in tail-wag- ging-the-dog behaviour, showed visible a p p r e h e ns on Monday night when the motel operator's application for a lic- ence came before them. Their appre- hension, w h i c h seemed to be based a gr e a t deal upon their bad experience w i t h other motel owners, with which Lucien Motel has no connect ion, came a littielate; the Byron Street motel built with a permit granted by the council's own staff is already in operation. There was a lot of council parlance that the hotel operator should have ap- Splied for the licence before now and the attitude, "We can revoke a licence any- time you know" was evident. The 1ayman, as has been proven when t h e ordinary working m a n dec ides to wags Editor,îa'ý,1-1 C o. mmnt' buy a house, is often 'taken' because no- one takes the trouble to explain to him the better or cheaper way. So often the little man must plough his way through bureaucracy from the municipal level and up. If council had any difficulty with al- lowing construction of the new Lucien Mote i it is hardly the time to be dis- cussing it now. Concrete w al I s shoW themotel is well beyond the 'discussion' stage. AsCouncillor Robert White so aptly put it: "We should be stopping the pro- cess at the permit stage not at the lic- ence stage. il The ordinary layman is not paid to know the intricacies of permit and Iic- ence granting. At the same t i m e there was a occer game being played in the s o utheast portion of the park. When the soccer game ended, someof the soccer fans decid- ed that it would be faster to walk ac- ross the bail field than walk around. In doing so, they hild up the bail q ame for a couple oi minutes. When the Ump ire and both coaches ask- ed the four AD- UL TS toplease go around the field th e y received no answer, just dirty looks. At this point, iasked them if they would mind hurrying a little. As they continued theircasual stroli I pointed out to them that we didn't delay their soccer g am e ,& we would 1 i k e t o continue with our baseball game. We finally got some res- ponse. Doug Weales, Georgian Court, Whitby. Answer According to Town of Whitby Recrea- t i on D i rector Gerry Gellette it is a problem with a backstop. The screen on the bail1 diamond apparently must be moved 6 fe e t back from town property needed for a road allowance. The park, he assures, can be used again when the obstructing backstop is moved.
