WHI TBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, June 8, 1972, page Il Opening Whitby Minor Girls Softball opened the season wi th a I arge turnout Monday ni g h t at Cen tennial Park. On deck to start the ball rolling was Mrs. H. Lott, a great champion for girls softball in the Town of Whitby for many years. Counc i1l lor Gerry Cox pitched the first b al I and spoke to about 75 girls, who were on hand to cheer their teams on in the first game. The Stars won a squeaker over the Comets 24-23 with pitcher Cindy Jones and some great back up catching from M a r i e W e i r . Both coaches Mrs. E. Fuller and Gord Kinzie have got their teams really fired up to start the seas- on off. Second Game In the second game the Rockets ver- s e d the Meteors. The Rockets behind the great pitching performance of Les- I ey Hawkins seemed to be*having an easy n i g h t until the top of the5th with the score 22-6. The Rockets changed pit- chers going into the 7th with only a 4- r un I ead 22-18. However a great Weekend The L a s c o Steelers were the last Whitby baseball cl1u b to go into action in the 1972 season but they got off on the right foot defeating Orono 10-7 in their E. O. B. A. B an t a m opener. The game featured some fine pi tching by the Whi t- by club's left-handers Mike Callan and Steve Sarginson, who held the visitors to s i x hits. Mike Callan who was only u se d sparingly last season started on the mound for the Steelers, and he came up with a strong performance in his first outing, striking o ut seven Orono bat ters through the four innings he worked. - Steve Sarginson came on in the fifth and matched his par tner is strikeout per- formance through the final three innings of the game, which was called-in the 8th because of darkness. The manage- ment was qui te pleased wi th the showing of the pitching duo the first time out. The Steelers jumped into an early lead a n d in spi te of coming up w i t h seven boots which cost them several unearn- ed runs, they offset their faulty field- ing with a low hit barrage. In the opening inning Dave Wall at bat with two men on, came through with a hom e run blast, not an easy feat in Fairman Park. Wall's play pushed the club intoan early lead which the Steel- ers hadextended to a 7-2 margin by the f i f th inning. Orono threatened with a three-run rally tomake it 7-5 in the top of the sixth, b u t this was the closest t h e v i s itors came to catching up with the Steelers. Mike Rowley hit a triple which drove in two runs and also came up with a pair of singles. Steve Sarginson a d d ed a doubl e, while Mike C a I I a n , George Hicks, Steve Tutton Tim Brown and Dave Wall had singles. This Sunday Port Hope will visit Fair- man Park for a game wi th the Steel ers In fine form Councillor Gerry Cox tosses first bail. double-play by Jenny Barkwell to Lynn Bal1am at first ended the hopes of the Me teor s. W ith another double on Thurs- d a y, then over to Almonds next week, it I ooks like it's caoinq to be a great Basebail which gets underway at 6:00 p.lm. The Legionaire Pee-Wees journeyed home with a lopsided 30-1 win for their th i rd victory of the season. The first linning was scoreless, and it appeared as if the game might be close, but when the Legionaires came up with five runs in the second and twelve in the third it w as apparent that the game was over, in spite of the old baseball adage that the game is "never over until the last man is out. " Cam Murkar picked up his sec on d w in of the season, and struck ou t t en wh i le holding the Port Hope te am h i tl1 e s s. Fred Petryshyn was brought in topitch the final two inn- ingsand to gain some experience at the PeeWee level, pitching extremely well. Relying on control rather than speed, t h e young southpaw was in controI all theway. Darren Vine had a big night at the plate with a triple and three singles. Dave McWhirter had a pair of doubles, Fred Petryshynhad threesingles, Blair Gibson had a triple and a single, Tim Tw ining a double, while John Heffer had a single. John Parrott and Cam Murkar added singles to the barrage off three Port Hope hurlers. TheKofCTykes suffered their first d e f e at of the season when they lost to Oshawa 8-7 in a game that Oshawa won in t h e bottom of t h e final inning when t h e y came from behind to score three runs and win the contest. It was just o n e of 'those nights' f o r t h e Whitby club. Mike Welling on the mound for Whitby struck out Il, yielded only five hits, which dn most nights is good en- oughforawinbutOshawa capitalized on t h e ir chances and that was the differ- ence as their hits fell in and produced runs , while Whitby who outhit them 1 0 - 5 d idn'tget quite as much mileage out of their safeties. Kevin McClelland season coming u p. A large turn out of parents helpedmake it a great opening. Th i s is the support the girls need to encourage them to be good sports. Results led the K of C hitters with three sing- leswhilePaul Heffer, John Wall, Rob- bie Scero, Butch Galley, Gary Shear- e r, Ken Ji mmo and Rick Schoer each hit safely once.
