The top of such a table as this will have been formed from two, one' in ch thick boards, mute testimony to t h e si z e of the tree from which the boardswere cut. If there is a drawer in one s ide of the table,.it may have a wooden drawer pull. Wherever one p i e c e o f wood joins another, there will probably be wooden pegs to hold the joints, thesewill protrude slightly b e c a u se the wood will have shrunk. These tables illustrate ail that is best in p i oneer furniture construction, they are sturdy, and plainly functional, they are built to last, unlike some of the early furnishings which were dis- c a r d e d as soon as something better couldbe afforded. A few of them have survived for a hundred and f ifty years, a no t surprising feat where families continue to I ive on land that was home- steaded by great-grandparents. They are -q u i t e heavy. They belong to the fi r s t half of the nineteenth century. Towards the end of that same century there was a wooden kitchen table which bore some resemblance to the harvest table, al though it was smaller and lighter, it should not be confused withtheauthenticpiece which is large I t m igh t be possible to find one of these at a low price at back country auctions, but dealers ask quite a high price based largely upon the fact that such pi eces are scarce. Thev are found in ail woods, al though the com- monest is pine. 1 1
