Page 8, Thursday, April 20, 1972, WHITBY FREE PRESS THE BRADLEY FARM -hy iim Quail A place Doctor M. M i chael is a man with an idea. The idea is a proposai for an area of W h i t b y c al1 ledthe Bradley Farm. Borderedby #12 Highway and the Third Con cession, the Bradley Farm is the c o n t r o v e rsial site of the new Police S t a t i on , and many residents feel the T o w n is t r y i ng to make the Bradley Farm the 'new' centre of Whitby. Dr. Michael refuted this and explain- e d t h a t Whitby had three core areas. The f i r s t is the downtown area where # I 2 H i g hway crosses Dundas Street. The second is the Thickson Road area at Dundas Street and the third area is, of course, the Bradley Farm. In 1969 the Town of Whi tby asked the Central Ontario Joint Planning Board to do a study of the Bradley Farm and c o m e u p w i th a proposai for develop- m en t. Dr. M ich ael was working for the Planning Board at the t i m e , and so the proposaI became his brainchilId. Dr. Michael explained what he felt the Bradley Farm should be. "If the town i s going to grow, we must create the k i n d of e n v i ronment we think the fu t ure requires. The kind of environ- ment where people can easily communi- c a t e, and the Bradl ey Farm Proposai can do this without detracting from what- ever potential the downtown area might have. "He went on to say, "In fact, the two areas might even compliment each other! Il Dr. Michael feels the downtown area should be boutique-type shops and the atmosphere should be like a small vill- age. The Thickson Road area, he felt, should b e commercial and the Bradley Farm should be a blend of residential, commercial and recreation functions. Marijuana, hashish lead to local d-rMug As the result of search warrant ex- e c u t i o n s directed by Town of Whi tby Police last week, several Whitby citi- zens have been charged wih drug off- ences. Marijuanat seeds found by Detective Sergeant Nicholson and Detective Woz- niak in a car stopped on Dundas Street i n the vicinity of Ash Street, led to a further charge at the driver's home on Walton Boulevard. As the r es ult of a search warrant carried out on Perry Street on Thurs- da y, a femalI e was charged for poss- Fatality for people...not Artist's model of Bradley Centre As for moving the centre of town or c o m p e t i ng wi th the present centre of town, Dr. Michael said, "The Bradley Farm can provide a centre for the town where the best of our human values can be implemented. " When the proposai was drawn up, Dr. M i c h a e l f el t the prime consideration for the B r a d 1 e y F arm should be that p e o pl1 e can identify wi th the environ- ment of the area. The design was, such thatpeoplecould feel more intimate and enjoy the aesthetic beauty and tranqui1- ityand be able to walk through gardens and enjoy green grass and trees. MDA Discoveries charges ession of hashish. In a still further investigation, MDA pills, commonly known as the 'love d ru g , were found hidden in the base- meni of a home on Byron Street North. OZOne person at the Byron North ad- d r e ss was charged wi th possession of the MDA p i I I s for traffic purposes, a n d a n other person was charged with hashish possession. A I 1 p e r s o n s charged were under 20years of age, and town police report t h a t f u rther indidents are still under investigation by the department. ...Two Whitby Brothers Kilied TwoWhitby boys, David Charlebois, 1 3 and hi s brother Dennis, 12, were killed in a car-bicycle collision Friday night at 8:05 p. m. The b o y s h a d just picked up their p a p er route money and were riding on t h e i r bicycles to meet their mother to help celebrate her birthday. While r id ing on #12 highway north- bound, just south of Taunton Road, they were s truck by a nor thbound car driven by Harvey Davis of Whitby. The boys were taken to Oshawa Gen- eral Hospital, but were pronounced dead on arrival. The attending coroner was Dr. J. A. Patterson. The boys are survived by their par- en t s , a younger brother and two sis- ters. Whitby Police have charged Harvey Davis with violating section 236 of the Highway Traffic Act, which states it is an offence to have more than . 08% aI- cohol in the bloodstream. cars The buildings are designed and situ- ated so th at they won't obscure the v i s i on b u t would rather enhance the s c ene. Roadways are mostly dead-end so that through traffic would be dis- co uraged and traffic noise would be at a m iin i mum, while still providing easy accessibility to the area. Ag r e a t stress was placed on open areas like parks which would ail be in- t e g r a t e d and inter-related. Schools are to be built around the open areas, and would be no more than five minutes w a I k i ng distance from the residential area. The p r o p o s a i provides for an in- te gration of townhouses, single family dwel lings, apartment buildings, com- mercial buildings, churches and cul- tural buildings such as a museum, meet- ing hall and exhibition buildings. Dr. Michael explained, "The Brad- ley Farm Proposai is pedestrian orien- tedsopeoplecanwalk, enjoy it and stay healthier. " He added, "If the people of Whitbywantthisidea, it can be implem- en ted. " '" If-anybody in Whitby is interested in coming down to the Municipal Offices, there i s a display on thé walls of the Planning Board office and Dr. Michael w o u I d be happy to answer any further q ues t ions y ou might have about the Proposai.
