WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, February lOth, 1972Y FROM A BIRD'S EYE VIEWI WIlIthe Real Van 6ough Stand Up.. Or How Do You Get Character in Heydenshore? Not being much of a social bird - if You'Illpardon the pun.1 Idon' tget out o'n the town toomuch, but 1 di dget out to the Mardi Gras at the Heydenshore Pavillion last Saturday night. 1 have dr iven by the pavili on and won- dered what it was 1like inside, so, 1 guess 1 was 1 o ok ing forward just as much to seeing inside Heydenshore as 1I was to going to the Mardi Gras. 1 was expect- ing something different but when i waik- ed 'in the front door and was met with t h e same o 1 d hole-in-the-waî i cloak- r oom I fel t, Heydenshore woul d be the same as -any other recreation pavi lion. I was wrong. Heyden!shore was dif- f e rent. When i got past the cloakroorn and insi de the main roomn, 1 reai ized how mu ch different Heydenshore was from most others 1 had seen. A ho.l Totully WItbufaracter 1Iwalked into that huge ballroom, and I was amazed. The room was total ly with- ou t c h aracter of any kind. It was, in fact, absolutely stark. 1 thought I had walked into a gymnasium. Now lim sure the architect didn't plan Heydenshore that way. He must have had something inmmmd, and the outside of the building shows it - but the inside shows nothlng. The outside of a building shoul d show character for that f irst impression, but undoubtedly most people will spend the major portion of their time inside the b u i 1 d i ng, so that is where the strong character should show lô'ud and clear. 1 t 1 s important because the charac- ter of a room can make or break a par ty. M o s t of the good bars and restaurants in Toronto have a unique character or decor ai 1 their own'to make the custom- ers feel welcome. So what happened at Heydenshore? Stark Saue Ame For those o f you who have not seen in side the building, let me say there!s nothingdrasticaîîy wrong, it's just be- cause the bal11roomi1s a huge room pai1n- ted stark white. The room screams for help, and i know just where we can get that heip. ONteLocal At So this is aplea for al1 you local ar- t i s ts to corne forth bearing brushes in h a n d. Then we'll1 let ail1 our talented artists get up on those sca- ffolds and do their thing on the walls. SWe need colour and lots of it, and we need a variety of styles, and 11mn sure there must be enough artists in town willing to donate their services to give our Heydenshore its badiy needed char- acter; and what better place to display y o ur talents t h an on the walIs of the bal lroom in your own town! After aIl it worked with the munici- pal1 building didn't it ? Those sketches of the Fathers of Confederation did more for that bui lding than even the architect himseif would have thought possible.
