Consequently, the light- ing used had been known for centuries. Candis Dipping C a nie dipping w as a regular chore. ln the l a ter settiements, every household had its can- dlemould, andbefore the appointed day, the small chilId in the family was sent around to the neigh- bours to borrowv as many more moulds as possible in order to produce as l arge a supply of candi es at one making a s could be had from the material at hand. This little reservoir was pear shaped, about an inch in depth, witha lid and a hanging handle. There was another lamp with a double reservoir, one above t h e o t h e r cal led a "lphoebe 1lamp"I. One of these latter c an be seen at Dundurn Castle. The orig- hn of the names seem to be lost. Som e c an dle holders were ingeniously made with clamnps around the candle which closed when t he ca ndI1 e burned d own, thus snuff ing out the fl1ame. Fleniish Spout Lamps Flemish spout lamps of brass are found occas- ion a lly, but it is difficult to know whether these cam e n or th with the U. E. L's or were acquired at a 1 a t er p e r i o di by globe-trotting Canadians. This lamp had a cylîindr ical reservoir andwernoun- tedon a stem with a conical base wvhich wvas filled with sand to keep it sturdy. The reservoir had a spou t w ith another open one just below to catch the drip. The burning wick protruded frorn the up- per spout. An Endless Variety Thevarietyof lamps seems almost endless, for thesettlerswere ingenious people, and when they couldnot immediately lay hands upon what was re- qui1red, they adapted the materials at hand to fit theneed. An elderly lady describing her life as a child on her father's farm around 1849, mentions t h e n e e d for a barn 1lantern. "He made i , lshe wrote, "of shingles, top, sides and bottom vi th a nail1 in the bottom to hold the candile. The front was apiece of glass, he drilled holes in the top to ai- l ow the pa s sage of air. A 1leather strap made a handî1e by wNh ch it could be hung from a nail."I This wvas an adaptation of the centuries-old barn lantern, that is made of pierced tin and instead of g 1 a ss had scraped horn in i ts door. They cast a mottled glow and eliminated some of the hazard of taking an open flame into a straw-littered barn. Lard & Whale Dil Fuel for Iamps in those early days was lard or w hale oil, and twin spouts were devised on some I amps for i t was found that twin flames gave a brighter and fuller light.
