I I liii - ~IU~ Committees Assigned For Storm Damage Relief Fund Two integral committees have been set up to explore claims, and to pro- mote an advertising drive for funds for the Whitby Storm Damage Relief Fund. The CI aims committee will begin a i a s w i th storm victims at the end of the month, and will have as a means of identification, a letter of authori ty sig- ned by the Mayor of the Town. MORE WATER WATER PROBLEMS FOR COUNCIL Another section of the Town has ap- pealed tocouncil for safe drinkingwater. 18 residents from the Anderson Street subdivision, between Rossland Road and Taunton Road appeared before council because the condition of the unsafe weli1s i n their area is "causing them concern for their health. " Group spokeswoman Miss Ethel Lyle presentedcouncil with a chart which in- dicated that deep welis in the area are un us able for drinking because of high iron, acid, very high hard water sait, and table sait content. Shallow wells prove polluted Miss Lyle also pointed out that own- ersof shallow wells had tests back from the Department of Health proving that the wells are highly polluted with coli- form and fecal count. T h e An de r son Street ratepayers asked that council first of al1 detect the source of the pollution, remedy it if at all possible, and consider extending the town water supply to the area. The m a t t e r was referred on to the operations comm ittee for further report to council. Local Plant Could Be Source 0f Pollution Ra tep ayers in the Rosedale Dr. area are still not satisfied with the ai- l e dg ed e m ission of heavy smoke and fumes from Continental Aiuminum. It's not going tao be an easy thing to prove, said one concerned ratepayer. Sm ok e c an only be witnessed in the s m a i Ihour s of the morning, and even then not on every morning. Branch met with plant personnel A complaint ta council forwarded on tg the Air M a n a gement Branch of the En vironment, Toronto has resulted in m e e tings between the branch and per- sonnel of Continental Aluminum. A 1 e t te r of c o m plaint against the factory sent to council on the 14th of S e p t ember was explained by the com- pany as a result of the inattention of an operator on duty. The Air Management Branch will meetvwith the ratepayers group and has invitedmembersof counc il to attend the meeting which is scheduled in the near future for further exploration. WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, November iith, 1971, Page 7 Whitby Resident Resident Snow-Jobbed By Town Fathers "WhitbyCouncilwil1only take action un d e r s trong protest", claims a town resident who appeared before town fath- e r s f or their consideration of needed roadwork in the Perry Street area. "A one or two-man strong deputation wil only get a snow job, and I was even told I did by a member of the council, " saysVictor Perroni of 606 Perry Street. M r. Perroni, who brought his case before council 3 weeks ago, says he is not impressed with counciI's dispos- ition of the matter of the requested road- work. Didn't want sidewalks "First of ail they (council) informed me th a t und e r the local improvement structure, the cost of sidewalk repairs is 95% to the owner, the town being responsible for 5% of the costs. " "But the pecul iar thing is, in neither the presentation I made to them in per- son, nor in the original presentation I drafted up, did 1lmake any mention what- soever of sidewalk repairs. " 'Whitmore' , Not Iroquois Council will apparently stick to its original decision in the name of the $70 million sports-recreation complex to be called "Iroquois". Despite the chagrin expressed by the Coun cil of Iroquo is who named their Iroquois Park through an order-in- c o un c il, and numerous voiced object- ions to t h e name of the new complex, Iroquois it will be. Themost recent objection came from aWhi tby resident, Mrs. Olive Robinson of Byron Street North. Objecting because "there is already one park inOntario by that name ", Mrs. Rob inson suggested that since athletic fetes are to be held in the park that per- haps "Whitmore" would be a more fitting name. Her letter with the name suggestion was marked 'receive and file'. 117 Trent St. W. Phono 668-3738 I "So a f ter a i ong debate regarding policy, they ended up concurring on an or i g i nal motion to review my problem again at budget time." "Surely if vast amounts of money can be made available for another town hall1, w hich is in excess, and if big scale projects 1 i k e the Bradley Farm Study can even be considered, they can make funds available for street repair that has been pending for years, and to correct the problem the average person in this town is having with sewage backup, Mr. Perroni continued. Public office should be in the interest of the people "There i s no doubt that council has the power to manipulate and to act when they so choose, but if they do not have the will, you may a s well forget it." "P e r h aps, said Mr. Perroni, council should use the privilege of their rights in public office in the interest of private p e o p le, r ather than take advan tage of being in municipal office.
