Page 2, Thursday, September 9th, 1971, Newspapers and Whitby '%OLD What Happened to Our Civic Pride? TYMER~ Is it possible for one local Whitby newspaper to survive? At present we have two, the WHITBY FREE PRESS and the WHITBYWORLD, withat least five outside financial ly powerful news- papers: The TORONTO GLOBE AND MAIL, TORONTO STAR, the TELE- GRAM, the NEWS ADVERTISER, and the OSHAWA TIMES; I am personally a s ub s c r i b e r to two of these of my choice, morning and evening to keep informed on Canadian and world events as do many local residents. County Town Papers I have today made a personal tele- phone survey with a number of news- p aper p ub i i shers in other Ontario County Towns adjoining our own Ont- ario County, and give you my findings. I have n o t found o n e county town east to the Quebec border fronting on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence, not served by a county newspaper. Their degree of progress through to ultimate successwill dependentirelyon Whitby County Town support - that support must start now and continue weekly, if Whitby is once again to become the authorative and official voice of this town and county, once done so wel, by the "Whitby Chronical 'lin its thorough coverage of news at its source.
