WHITBY FREE PRESS, Wednesday, August 25th, 1971, Page 7 ONLY WHITBY 3 Clubs Eliminated froin Finals Saturday was mostly clear and sunny in the weather department, but it was a bleak day for Whitby baseball followers as three Whitby clubs were el iminated in one day from the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association finals. The Attersley Juveniles, the Whitby Dodge-Chrysler Midgets and the Leg- i o n a i r e Pee-Wees came to an early season's end for 1971. Earlier in the week the Lasco Steeler Bantams were knocked out by Cobourg in their bid for E. O. B. A. honours when they dropped a 10-4 decision to drop the series in two straight games. In the series opener played in Whitby, the Steelers gave away runs in a sloppily played display. In the second contest p I a y-e d at Cobourg's Donegan Park, Cobourg won their own game with an explosive display of power hitting to t a k e t h e series and the E.O.ED. A. Dantam crown. The early end to the S t e e I e r s season was a surprise as most followersexpected the club to go a long way toward a provincial title. The club ran up an impresive 16-3 season record, defeated Lindsay h and il y in the semi-finals and were considered by most to have a better than even chance to knock out Cobourg. The Whitby Dodge-Chrysler Mid- gets hooked up with Port Hope in a 3 out of 5 series for the E.O. B. A. Mid- get crown which went the limit before the Dodge-C h r y s I e r s bowed out on Saturday3-1, tobring an exciting and well-p layed series to an end. The Vhi tby club shut out Port Hope 3-0 and 6-0 for their two victories and lost by 3-1, 6-1 and 3-1 counts. Harold Moore, the Dodge-Chrysler right hander appeared in three games of the series and through twenty-seven inn- ings allowed only one walk, a great display of control pitching. The dec- iding game was played in Port Hope on Saturday. Port Hope went into a third inning 3-0 lead. Twice the HOPE LIES Wi Dodge-Chryslers threatened. In the eighth they left two men on and in the ninth they had the pack in an uproar when they loaded the bases but failed to push a run across. Harry Long, Dave Wall and Scott Huntley were the only Whitby hi tters to get to Port Hope h ur l e r Neil Pemberton who won al1 three victories for his club, allowing only three runs in the three games he pitched. Catcher Jim Twining came up with an outstanding game for Whitby throwing out the runner on three steal attempts. Whitby Legionaires At the same timeas the Dodge- Chryslers were losing to Port Hope, a few miles to the east, the Whitby Legionaires were coming to the end of the ir bid for E. O.B.A. honours as they dropped a5-1 decision in the third game of the Pee-Wee A finals. Whitby had won the opener 8-3 in Cobourg a week ear1ier, then dropped the second game played in Whitby 4-0 the next day, to set the stage for a third and deciding game in Cobourg. The outcome was a 5-1 loss for the Legionaires and the Pee-Wee title for the Pirates, their second in a row. The Legionaires had one bad inning, the third, when Co- bourg took a 4-0 I ead. John Heffer wi th a double and a single, Jody Turner withtwosingles, andFRoly Barlow with a single suppliledkey hits for the Leg- ionaires but the rest of the club had left their batting eyes at home and were completely unable to put any kind of rally together and one run is seldom enough towin a bail game. Cam Murkar held the Pirates to four hits, had nine strikeouts and issued three walks, a winning performance on most days. Attersley Juveniles The Attersley Juveniles bowed out of thepicture with a 7-3 loss to Keene in the E. 0. B.A. Juvenile finals, they h ad dropped the opener 11-9. The series final played at E. A. Fairman TH TYKES was a well pl ayed game, wi th the score tied 3-3 in the seventh but the strong Keene club went out in front with a four run eighth to win the game and take the t i t I e . Greg Cairns, started on the mound for Whitby but was knocked out e a r l1y and George Yates came on in rel ief. Whi tby'Is baseball fortunes now rest with the K of C Tyke club which took the E. O. 3. A. Tyke A champion- ship defeating Bowmanville 4-1 and 25-2. The K of Cis now enter the O. B.A. playdowns and are awaiting wordof the first series. The K of C's lost their opening game in the regular s c h e d u I e but have been undefeated since in regular season and play-off games. Last year's K of C club brought the first provincial baseball title to W h i t b y in seventeen years and this year's edi tion in the eyes of many ob- servers has equal promise of repeat- ing.
