On Sunday church bells rang indi- cating the service hours, both morning and evening. Every waking hour of our lives, we all live with our thoughts, and of- ten, even in our dreams. Beginning from the age of reason (generally s e v e n ) through childhood andon throughout our lives, all of the most important events through each of our lives are well remembered. But strange as it seems, the events of our earliest years, our most impression- ableyearsthrough childhood linger in our minds longer and more clearly than al others, indel ibly recorded. Whitby Town Bells In this article I have chosen just one thing outof the countless things I well r e m e m b e r throughout my childhood years. The subject is those great old Whitby Town Bells. My impressions go back to the year 1900 when I had reached the age of seven. BelIs throughout past centurles became essential to life in every in- habited community throughout the en- tire world. People'- daily 1ives were regulated by bells long before clocks andwatches were invented. Sun dials were there but worked in silence. BelIs rang out loud and clear from their central locations In each community and sounded out to the far limits of towns and villages. Each day work and ail daily activ- ity in every community began general ly with the first morning bell at six or s i x t h i r ty a. m. Bell1s served so many purposes here in Whitby in those days, and among ail our belIs, first and foremost were the beautiful Anglican (AIlI Saints) Church chimes. Next came our old historical Town B e ll , centrally located a t the rear of o u'r most excellent Old Town Hall, gone and sadly missed. There were bells, bells and bells through this town and county. . . fire~ bells, school bells, railway locomo- tivebells, bob-sleigh and cutter bells, auction sale hand bells - and yes, in earl ier days, before fences when cows wandered grazing freely, there vere- cow bells on a leather strap around the cow's neck, to indicate to their o w n e r s w here they were when they were led back home at milking time. Of alI the b el1î1 s described here, the only remaining belIs are the chimes of All Saint's Church. All of the ot- her's have disappeared through obso- lesence. If there is one thing in this wide world that we can be certain will never in future history ever become obsolete, itmustsurely be church and cathedral chimes. Church chimes com- prise a group of four stationery bell s, each with a different half-tone. A set of these chime bells is called a "car- rillion. " The player is called a car- ri lonneur.
