The derby, spon- sored by the Whi tby KiwanisClub, will be held from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m. Aug. 2 in the parking lot be- h i n d t he Ontario County Building & is open to ail coun ty residents aged 7 to 14. The Cana- da Yearbook Whitby Shel1 and L asco Steel tro- Dunlop Tire to Sponsor Carnival Bicycle Races A30-mile bicycle endurance race sponsored by Dunlop Tire and co- ordinated by the YMCA Youthpower, w il 1 be one of the Coun ty Town Carn- ival highlights. The race, open to young people aged 15 and over, begins at 9 a. m. , August 2 at the Dominion Store plaza on Brock Street South, although con- testants are requested to be at the site at 8 a. m. The route follows Gilbert Street from the plaza to'Reynolds Street, north on Reynolds to Dundas, east on Dundas to Anderson and north on An- derson to Winchester Road, Brook- lin. The cyclists will then turn north on Queen Street, turn west on Cas- sels Road to Pearl, north on Pearl and up W ay Street t o the seventh concession. They will then go west on the seventh concession to county road 5A and north on 5A to the Whi tby- Reach town line. The return trip wi1l1 be by the same route. The race will end at the Dominion plazawithfiveto ten laps around the parking lot, completing the 2½ hour run. Applications will be sent out to parks and major public centres in Whitby, and are available at the Y MCA office in the Centennial Buil- ding. Allapplicationsmust be turned in to the YMCA before the event. Doug Sutton, who is in charge of the race, said he expects about 15 to 25 entries. Any type of bicycle may be used, althoughl10 speed racers are expected to be the favour i te k ind. Thewinner will receive the Dun- lop Trophy, previously awarded to the w inner of professional races hel d in the town a few years ago. There wil I be trophies for first, second & third, as well as ribbons, and ail entrants will receive a crest. phies will be aw- arded to the-win- ners in the delux and standard cl asses and for the best design. Thewinners will alsoreceive small trophies to keep & all who enter will be given a crest. A 1imi ted number of applications are available at Koke's Shell Station, 403 Brock Street S., and from John Griffiths, 104 Athol Street. Ru 1le s and reg- ulations are in the a p p l ication form and a registration fee of $1 must be paid on submitting applications. The derby will be divided in to 2 categories, stan- dard and delux, & al cars mustbe inspected and authorized by Mr. Griffiths, the cheif marshall. Ali cars must have adequate steering &braking systems and driv- ers must wear h e a d protection. Only one driver may be registered per car. The soap box derby is one of the even t s which has become traditional as part of t h e County Town Car- nival which is now in its sixth year. More than 50 en- tries are expected to take part in the Giant County Town Parade which starts off Whitby's 6th annual County Town Carnival. The parade will start at 10 a.m. sharp July 31 at Denis O'Connor High School and pr oceed south on C o c h rane Street to Dundas. If the reconstruction of Brock Street has not begun, it will proceed along Dun das and southon Brock Street to Centennial Park. If the anticipated road construction has begun, the parade will march along Dundas St. and turn north on Byron where it wil I followMary, Perry and Green Streets to Brock Street & proceed to the park. When the parade reaches the park, each participating band will take part in a concert and awards will be presented to the best bands and floats. Bands al r e a d y signed up for the parede are the Etobicoke Crusa- ders, York Optim- ists Lancers, the Villagers from Bobc a y g eon, the Ajax Kinsmen G i r l s' 1Balmoral Band, and the Sc a r borough El- ainettes, a major- ette group. The W h i t by YM CA Youthpower and day camp, Lionç Club, Jaycees Lasco Steel, and Town of Whitby have already en- tered floats in the parade. The Fire Dep- artment will put its 1924 & 1971 trucks afloat, a truck built by the depart- ment and the bath- tub car in the par- ade also. A prize wi11 be offered for the best decorated and most h u morous bicycle in the parade, with the w inners rec- e iving trophies, and ail who par- ticipate will be given a crest. Parade Chairman L a r ry Voyde has indicated there are many unofficial en- tries planned that have not yet signed up and more floats ar e expected be- fore carnival time.
