WHITBY FREE PRESS, Wednesday, June 30th, 1971, Page 9 BASEBALL With three games in four days the Whitby Legionaires of the Eastern Ont- ario Basebal I Association Pee-Wee ser- ies were Whitby's busiest league lead- ing Oshawa Red Barn club an 8-5 setback at Centennial Park. WinningpitcherCam Murkar allowed only two hits and issued only one walk in picking up the victory. John Heffer led the Whitbybatters with a double and a single, Chris Vine, Dave McWhirter and Steve Tutton each had doub1es, while Jody Turner, Darren Vine and Roly Bar- low had singles. LEGIONAIRES On Saturday the Legionaires hosted Lindsay at Centennial Park and dropped an 8-4 decision to the cellar dwellers in a game which saw the Whitby club m ak e f ou r costly miscues. The Leg- ionaires were ahead by a 4-2 lead until the sixth, when a six man Lindsay out- burst put them out in front 8-4. Whitby hitters in the losing cause were Roly Barlow, Chris Vine and Steve Tutton. Cen ten ial Park was the scene on Sunday for the closest and most excit- ing Pee-Wee game this season, when t h e Legi o n a i r es defeated the Belle- ville Trainmen 4-0. Cam Murkar was on the mound for t h e Legi o n a ires and the Whitby left- hander picked up his second win in 4 days as he came up with a sparkling one hitter. In pitching the shutout, he issued only two walks and had a no-hitter going until the sixth inning. Roiy Barlow with two singles, John Heffer, Chris Vine and Jody Turner each with one single were the Whi tby hi tters. The Le g i o n a i r e s performance in the field was their best of the year. The Whitby club does not have any E.O. B. A. action this week, but is entered in the General Foods Tournament in Co- bourg on Saturday. LASCO STEELERS The Lasco Steelers cont inued to roll along in the E. O. B. A. Bantam series, winning handily 21-7 over Frankford in the first of two games played on Sunday at E.A. Fairman. Right-hander Dave Allen gave up five hits in chalking up the win while his mates put together a 17 hit attack. A. Fair- man Park was the scene of a 3-2 thriller in which the Whitby Dodge Chrysler Mid- gets lost out to Peterborough, but the outcome was in doubt until the final out, as the two clubs put on one of the hard- est fought battles of the season. Peterborough hurler John Huddle- stonegaveup four hits in picking up the victory, whi le his opponent Dodge Chry- ,sler right-hander Scott Huntley, gave u p a n e qu al1 number of safeties. The Whitby club threatened in the eighth, when they loaded the bases with none out but couldn't get the equalizer. Mike Shiskowas tops for Whitby on the plate with two singles, while ScottHuntley had one single, and Doug Morrison a double. Future Games On Dominion Day, July Ist, Oshawa will be the visitors at E.A. Fairman for an E. O. B. A. Midget fixture which gets underway at 2:00 p. m. , and on Sunday the Lasco Steelers will at- tempt to keep their winning streak in- tact in an E. O. 8. A. Bantam game with a one o'clock start at the same park. MacDonald Tushingham Star The Whitby K of C Tyke All-Stars, coming up with 3 impressive victories, won the Newmarket Tournament Champ- ionship. This annual tykes tournament, spon- sored by the Newmarket Minor Easeball1 As s oc i a tion is represented by teams from all over the province. Mark MacDonald and Greg Tushing- ham turned in stellar performances for the Whi tby team. MacDonald wi th h i s pitching and Tushingham with spectac- ular hitting. MacDonald in picking up two pitching victories, threw a four and a two hitter. His battery mate, Tushingham, had ten hits in three games, of them hom- ers with one being a grand slammer. In their first game, Whitby defeated Dundas 12-1. MacDonald was the winning pitcher, tossinghisfour-hitter. 3atting stars were Tushingham wi th a home run, a triple and two singles, Dave Cane with two singles, and Paul Brown with two singles. In the second game, K of C's defeated Brampton 1 7-7. John Samanski, the club's rookie right hander yielded only 5 hits. Greg Tushingham led at the plate withhisgrandslam homerun, triple and single. Paul 3rown had a double, while John Parrott and Mark MacDonald each had a pair of singles. In the first championship game against Toronto' s Greenwood Park, Whi tby won easi ly on a brilliant pitching perfor- m a n c e b y Mark MacDonald 8-0. Mac- Donald allowed the strong Toronto just 2 hits. Greg Tushingham, for the third con- secutive game, put on a display of power hitting with two home runs. Dave Cane had a single and double. .Paul Heffer had two singles, while John Buisman smashed in a triple.
