I bV MvwINm One of the architectural gems of dowmiown Wluitby la the Devereil block, on the west side of Brock St. S., wl"c was bufit and owned by an eady Whitby onnwctr named Thomas Devereil. Bufit in 1878, it consit of fIve stores. The odginal occupants were: Laing and Stewart, dry goods; J.S. Robertson, staionery; and E.J. Johnson, fumiture and undertaking. It is not know who occupied the two middle stores lu 1878. After Laing and Stewart (later C.F. Stewart's store), which is now the location of Donald Travel, closed in 1911, the store was talcen over by hardware merciaut Jacob Mclntyre. Thec bank's tenure waa short-lived, however, for it was cosed oni acount of thie GreaDepression in 1935. McIntyre Hardware moved to tie second store in 1929 and oemaloed there a busy place until 1956. For a few years, stafing in 1919, die tbil store was the home of the Bank of Commerce, which joined the Standard Bank in 1929. Thomas Devereil, who bujit these stores, was a builder in Whitby for neady 60 yeais. He leamied his tirsde of masonry by belping to build, St. John's Anglican Church, at Port Whitby in 1846. At one trne, there was much fine Victorian woodwork around the windows and along the roof line of Devcreil's block, but over the years it has been oemoved.
