AIthough stripped of rnuch of its finery, the building is still attractive today. For many years, the omamenta woodwork along the roof lne inluded the date "1874" - as pictured in the photograph below. Samuel Hatch's sons, Fred and Frank, took over the hardware store in the 1880s and it was sold by Fred HatchtMoGeorgeM.RMmeîn 1904; Rice operated it until his death in 19331' The building contmnued to house a hardware store hmfl the 1950s. ln 1967, the building was cinpletely emnodeiled and divided in two stres. At that time, the brick was çleaned and the -ornarnental'woodo rk arcnd the windowsý restored. From 1910Oto 1926, the upper floos were occupied by tliree lodges - the Composite Masonic Lodge, the Keystone Chapter. Royal Arch Masons, and St. John the Almoner Preceptory. The Hatch faniily was quite prommnent in Whitby's history. Samuel and Richard were founding directors of the Ontario Ladies' Coilege (now Trafagar Castie School) in 1874, the same-year they built their store on Brock St. They were also founding trustees of the Methodist Tabernacle (now St. Mark's United Giurch) In 1875. Samuel Hatch died in 1883 and Richard moved to Toronto, where he died in 1936 at the age of 97. Frank Hatch sold Ns interest i the store in 1889 and inoved to western Canada. Fred Hatch sold the store in 1904 to becomne the owner of the buckle factory (where the IGA Plaza is now). Fred lived ia the bouse at the corner of Byron and Dunlop streets that is now the Whitby Montessori School.
