It was buit in 1873 to replace a sîmilar brick building, whlch was destroyed by fixe. Named after James H. Gerrie, who servcd as Whitby's mayor frorn 1869 to 1871 and diedlin 1872, the building bas a date atone wbich reads "Gerrie, 1873" over the third floor corner winclow. S.W.B.
