Broo klln Walking the Link to P.E.I. - an 8-mile trip By- STEPHENLEAH11Y Jrooklin correspondent Brooklin's Bob Heron and Oshawa's Darcy Bell experienced a bit of Cana- dian history when they joined some 23,000 other Canadians who walked the -13-kilometre long Confed- eration Bridge last Saturday. The bridge, commonly called the Link, crosses the Northumberland Strait to connect P.E.I. to New Brunswick. "There was a feeling of a historic occasion," says Bob about the three-hour walk across. Last Saturday was the first and only time the bridge will be opened up to pedestrians, as the bridge is strictly for travel- ling by car or truck. Walkers from all over Canada bought the $6 tick- ets for a-once-in-a-lifetime chance to walk the 13 kms of steel and concrete. But despite Bob's daughter, a resident of New'; Bruns-'ý wick, having bought them tickets, they very nearly missed their chance. "There was a four-mile traffic jam to get to the bridge," says Bob. The parking lot was jammed with cars early in the morning and people were trying to parking on lawns and in people's driveways he says. "I feel sorry for those who bought tickets and didn't get a chance to walk it." He and Darcy decided to attack the problem from -Photo by Bob Heron Span of Green Gables: from the Island to everywhere the other end and took the ferry across *t'O island. The traffic was better but they stili had a two-mile walk to the link itself. Once on the bridge itself, they enjoyed the "festival atmosphere. People were dressed as Ann of Green Gables and Fathers of Confederation,"» says Darcy. Bands, bagpipers, entire famlisbabies- in car- niages and people in wheel- chairs ail enjoyed making the crossing in one direc- tion of the other. "Every- one was friendly, enthusiastic and having a lot of fun," says Bob. "We enjoyed it, but neyer again," says Darcy with finality.
