McTeague endorsed by Durhami police By MIKE KOWALSKI Free Press Staff Writer Former Whitby MP- Daî McTeague has received th( backing of Durham's fines in his re-election bid. The Durham Regional Polic( Association has endorse< McTcague's candidacy in thc Junc 2 federal election. Until recentîy, the MP for the soor to be defunet Ontario riding MeTeague is the Liberai candidate in the new riding of "Pic keri ng-Aj ax-Ux bridge. Although it sponsored. a public forum in Oshawa during the 1995 provincial election, the association's endorsement of McTeague marks the first time the police union has formally backed a candidate for political office. "He's (Mcleague) been very supportive of policing and justice issues as a representative on the (Parliament) Hill," explained association president Brian Curtis. "We had a rally with the Canadian Police Association. in February and he was very supportive of our issues." Curtis cited two of McTeague's initiatives as the primary reasons for the endorsement. The first was his seconding of former Liberal (and now independent) MP John Nunziata's private member's bill calling for repeal of Section 745 of the Criminal Code, the so-called 'faint hope clause' which allows soîneone convicted of first- degree murder to seek release after serving 15 years of the mandatory 25-year sentence. The second was McTeague's own bill which would give judges less lexibility in sentencing criminals to concurrent terms, but would instead require themn to i mpose consecutive sentences if the offender had committed more than one crime. "We've always been strong on having it (Section 745) repealed," said Curtis. " First-degree is premeditated, planned murder, it's not like second- degree which can happen during a domestie (dispute)," he said. "It's one of the most difficult convictions to obtain and if you can prove they planned it, why ]et people like (mass murdere ,r Clifford) Olsen out?" Noting that the association has traditionally. avoided becoming involved in partisan politics, Curtis said it had little choice but to adapt to changing.times. "Unfortunately in the '90s you bave to be a player in the game," he said. "We're looking at iL from a police and public safety issue. People want safe streets and Dan McTeague promotes public safety." The first-term incumbent welcomed the association's endorsement, which followed similar expressions of support from the Canadian Police Association and the Metropolitan Toronto Police Association.. "S ince my election in 1993, I have endeavoured to support a variety of measures aimed at providing safe homes and safe streets in our community and across our country," said Mcleague in a prepared statement. "Canadians want our crimiùnal justice systemn to ensure public safety and provide appropriate protection for the rights of victims," he said. I believe the federal government has taken a responsible approacli. to addressing the' concerns of Canadians. Nonetheless, further reforms are still require 'd to provide Canadians with increased confidence in our crimidnal justice system."
