Page 6, SaturdaY, May 3,1997 WHT IIrFRE>RS e dito n5 l' We're back. Beginning today, the Whitby Free Press returns to weekly publication - with a few differences. .Those differences will be ini largely our behind- the-scenes processes. Our new computer system, our new electronic production, our state-of-the-art photo process -ail will be invisible until you visit our offices at 900 Hopkins St. The most visible change has to be our publ ication day. For twenty-five years we j oined most weekly newspaprs with a Wednesday edition. But the shopping patterns and the needs of readers and advertisers have changed radically in that past quarter century. That Wednesday pay-day, Thursday shopping day belonged to an earlier, industrial society, before the informationi age, before Sunday shopping and entertainment. So we now corne to you when you have the time to enjoy your weekend leisure in what we bel ieve to be on e of the best communities in the Greater Toronto Area. What will remain the same, or be improved by our use of new technology, will be our emphasis on local news. We will continue to be the only newspaper published in Whitby, for Whitby, by Whitby residents. Whitby with'us is not a sideline, but our reason for being. So we will continue to provide a weekly diet of who is doing what in Whitby, what events are affecting Whitby residents and a useful list of coming evenis in and around Whiîby. We will continue 10 track issues important to Whiîby residents, and present these in a regular featutres/focus page opposite our editorial page. Our editorial page will continue to be a sounding board for our readers. We feel firmly that sincere discussion by informed citizens is essential to the.building of community. We will also attempt to provide leadership in some of these issues. That means taking a stand, although that will neyer be done inf a way to stifle debate. And what do we believe in? First, Whutby. We think it is a great place to live, to play, to work. Second, we believe in Whiiby residents. Our first aimn is 10 be the plaîform through which you can learn ail about accomplishments of your neighbors. But our main message for readers is simple: wc want to hear from you. We want to present as complete a summary of community events as possible. Let us share with other readers your accomplishments, and those of your children and your neighbors. If you are involved in a communiîy organizations, we would lîke to meet you. If you have vicws on local issues, share those views with the community through our letters to the- The only Newspaper owned and operated by Whîtby residents for Whitby residents!
