They hope to have the piece, called the Raft of the Polar Bears, installed at Coronation Park before the ground freezes this year, to be ready for the 28th annual Courage Polar Bear Dip on Jan. 1. To date, the dip has raised approximately $1 million for World Vision's water projects worldwide. "I think the polar bear dip is a really worthy cause. They raise a lot of money for a really good cause," Jackson said. "For me as an artist, I feel the polar bear is a symbol of environmental awareness. I've always been very interested in doing a piece about polar bears for that reason, it's very topical. It's hard to see an image of a polar bear now and not think of those environmental issues." Jackson has already received the go-ahead from the Town of Oakville and has collaborated with the Courage brothers the organizers of the annual dip to create the bear installation. The project began about a year ago, when Jackson received funding from Courage Distributing to pay for the Styrofoam to make a sculpture for the one-day event last year. The sculpture was placed in the registration area of the dip "As it was sitting up there, everybody started to go around and taking their picture with it," Trent Courage said. "Then the idea started to come out, wouldn't it be cool if we could have some permanent structure?" Trent and his brother Todd Courage were impressed with the Styrofoam piece when it arrived. Trent said a permanent structure would help mark Coronation Park as the place of the Oakville Polar Bear Dip.
