www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, October 4, 2012 · 10 Beware computer scam OAKVILLE'S BIGGEST & ONLY HALLOWEEN SPECIALTY STORE Halton police are asking residents to be wary of who they give their personal information out to after scam artists recently contacted Halton residents posing as representatives of a computer repair company. Police said there are numerous variations of the scam, but generally the scammer tells the resident they are a representative of a computer service or repair firm and profess to know the resident is experiencing computer problems. The resident is then tricked into accessing a particular website and providing personal information that eventually allows the caller to gain access to their computer. Police said in some cases, personal information is taken off the computer that can lead to identity theft. In other cases, the victim downloads a virus, which causes computer problems the caller will offer to fix for a fee. In one recent case, the victim ended up paying the caller several hundred dollars. To avoid being victimized by scammers claiming to be computer company representatives, police advise residents: · Not to buy any software or services · Ask if there is a fee or subscription associated with the service. If there is, hang up · Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer · Take the caller's information down and immediately report it to local police · Never provide credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from a computer technical support company Further information and prevention tips can be found at www.haltonpolice.ca under the `Community Policing' tab Safety and Security Tips.
