Experience should help Hornets climb standings Continued from page 30 31 · Friday, September 28, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER FILE PHOTO HORNETS OPEN SEASON: Amanda Pereira of the Oakville Hornets carries the puck up ice during a playoff game against London last season. Pereira, who finished third in scoring on the Hornets last season, is one of seven returning players this year. Oakville had just two returnees last year. us steal some games." They proved that in the Stoney Creek tournament when they tied a top American team and then went 16 shooters deep into a shootout before being eliminated by Etobicoke. While the Hornets lost their two leading scorers -- Melani Moylan is playing at Ohio State while Victoria Bach has joined PWHL rival, Mississauga -- Leonard says she likes the look of the Hornets up front. "We have a lot of power forwards," she said. "They're strong players so we'll have a lot of wins in the corners. I think we'll have a lot of scoring." "We're very competitive. We're not afraid to battle," Pereira added. "Our speed gives us an advantage, too." The Grade 12 Holy Trinity student, Heather Platt (the Hornets' third leading goal scorer last year) and Lindsay Stenason give Oakville a solid returning group. Hayley Scamurra, who averaged a point per game in Burlington last season, will also add some offensive punch as will Michelle Quick, another addition from the Barracudas. While most teams opened the PWHL season last week, the Hornets spent the weekend in Rochester, where they played the RIT Tigers, a team that features 16 PWHL grads, including former Hornet Lindsay Grigg and Oakville's Ali Binnington. RIT won the NCAA Division III title last year before moving to Division I this season. RIT beat the Hornets 6-1 but for once, the score was not the most important thing. "That was a great experience to play a Division I team," Leonard said. "That's the goal for a lot of players and it helps everyone see what it takes and see if that's what they really want to do." For now, what the Hornets want to do is build on last year's playoff success. "I think we can finish top 10 (in the 20-team league), and then surprise some teams in the playoffs," Pereira said. --Follow Herb Garbutt on Twitter, @herbgarbutt Little League registration underway Just weeks after the conclusion of the 2012 summer baseball season, Oakville Little League is looking ahead to next year. Registration for the 2013 campaign is underway and early registrants can take advantage of reduced rates. Registration can be done at the Oakville Little League fieldhouse, located at 425 Cornwall Rd., Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. or Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The league is coming off a successful summer in both the house league and all-star programs. Oakville Whitecaps all-star teams, meanwhile, played in numerous tournaments throughout the summer and earned several titles. The season was capped with the 14th annual Adam Fedoruk Memorial Tournament, a competition in tribute of the former Oakville Little League player who lost his life in a 1998 house fire. Both championship teams in the tournament were presented with Toronto Blue Jays jerseys with Adam's name and number on the back. This is also the first year Oakville Little League is offering a four-week fall schedule for players aged 9-12 to extend their baseball season. "This is the beginning of a long-term fall ball program that we expect to grow, based on the incredible turnout this (year)," said John Mooney, Oakville Little League's vice president of baseball operations. For more information on Oakville Little League or to register for 2013, visit the league's field house, log onto its website www.ollb.org or call 905-827-1831.
