Students' options open with new SHSM programming Halton District School Board students can gain credits in Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs this year. The board is offering 45 SHSM programs in the 2012-13 school year at 15 high schools. The new programs include HELP -- Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services at Georgetown District High School and Health and Wellness at Aldershot High School. SHSM programs are open to students in both the public and Catholic board. Transportation is available. The program allows students to keep options open as they pursue a post-secondary program or career after high school graduation. Grade 11 and 12 students choose a major, such as Business, Construction, Arts and Culture or the Environment, and specialize their education around that field. Students have the opportunity to engage in experiential learning through field trips, guest speakers and by completing a cooperative education placement in the sector that interests them. They also complete a bundle of courses recommended by post-secondary and industry and earn sector-recognized certifications to give them more qualifications towards their post-secondary and career goals. The HELP program is for students interested in the justice, community safety and emergency services sector who want to make a difference as a positive role model in the community. The other new program, Health and Wellness, is for students interested in the health and fitness field and allows them to receive certification in Can Fit Pro. Students who work on SHSM credits are simultaneously working on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma, which is enhanced by a Red Seal once they graduate and complete the SHSM requirements. 23 · Friday, September 28, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com The Regional Municipality of Halton Access Halton at: www.halton.ca Dial 311 Please contact us, as soon as possible, if you have any accessibility needs at Halton Region events or meetings.
