Palermo Church eyes its future Continued from page 12 13 · Friday, September 28, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com JAMES HOGGETT / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER / @halton_photog back in the day: At a recent 200th anniversary celebration at Palermo United Church are, from left, Bruce Bainbridge, event organizer Glenn MacPherson and Terry Lemon. 3 BODY PARTS ONLY $ *Legs not included 100 FULL LEGS ONLY LASER HAIR REMOVAL Other Services Include: Facials | Chemical Peels Photofacials "(It) has shut off the eastbound access to the building. Anyone coming east has to go up the new bypass and back down again," said Ferguson. The church is also coping with an inadequate water supply, having to test it constantly. "We're (barely) able to keep our head above water there," said Ferguson. Other developments alongside Dundas could be positive, but churchgoers will have to wait until construction is completed, she said. "We have no idea when water and (sewer) will reach Palermo. It's hard to make plans for the future because without it (water and sewer), we can't move forward," said Ferguson. But it hasn't been all gloom in recent times -- Ferguson has seen some positive faithbased changes within Palermo. Despite dwindling numbers, those still attending are putting more emphasis on their faith, she said. "We still have a lot of people on the fringes that still do turn to the church for weddings, funerals (and) family func- tions," said Ferguson. "They still do call us, their church, for support in bad times, which seems to call upon your faith maybe a little bit more. "People still look to the church for space and activities," she added. For Ferguson and the other 49 members, reaching the 200year milestone has been one of their proudest moments. "To have services after 200 years is a blessing. We are still a vibrant congregation to this day, even though we're smaller," said Ferguson. She hopes the younger generation will fill the shoes of all those who came before them to help Palermo United Church remain active in the future. "We want the community to feel we can work together to make (Palermo) enjoyable to all. We want to be there to meet the needs of the community." $ 75 Oakville's State-of-the-Art Hearing Clinic Reputable Medical Esthetician Services Discounted over 70% Refer a friend and get a free service worth up to $40 2374 Robmar Dr, Oakville, ON · 416.738.8294 · marianusca@cogeco.ca Chantelle fitting days October 2-5 OPEN HOUSE October 4th (10am - 4pm) Come experience the latest in Hearing Aid Technology!
