Era news editor NEWMARKET When the last breath of 1984 is taken Mon day night eventful year in Newmarket will draw to a close For some the year has been lough going for others rewar ding and for others a little bit of as they passed through what could be described as neveradullmoment 12 months From last January to these last few of December events affecting Newmarket residents have flowed at a quick pace Although events have been varied probably politics at all levels has been the dominant force in the weekly Regional council seemed first off the mark with Bob decision early in the year to vacate the regional chairmans seat to become the regions Chief Executive Of ficer Jockeying to succeed him began resulting fa the selec tion of Markhams mayor Tony Roman as chairman However before the year was up Mr Roman resigned the position as a result of his successful bid for election as a member of parliament for York North The battle to succeed him brought Newmarket Mayor Ray Twinney into the race and with thai move much speculation on the municipal level about who would succeed him at Newmarkets helm However at the last minute the Newmarket mayor did not run for the chairmans position and members of Newmarket fell back in line some with mixed feelings but others including town employees cracked open champagne Federal election With an early September election on tap the federal political scene was also soon to be hopping with four can didates surfacing to challenge PC encumbent Sinclair Stevens McPherson was in the ring for the Liberals John Hall for the New Democratic Party and Thomas Dresson for the Libertarians Independent Ray also donned sparring gloves and declared he was running for the Spirit of Canada Events leading up to voting day includ ed many successful all candidates meetings including one by the York North Peace Group to ta me consecutive time Mr Stevens part of a countrywide landslide for the PC party rose to regional industrial expan sion minister and has been a key voice in the new government Caution in 85 On the municipal level all council members but the mayor and Councillor Bob Scott have been cautious about announ cing plans for the municipal election However their announcements have set the stage for some careful thinking by several veteran councillors expected to make a bid for a higher office this time around Mr Scott hopes to be the next regional councillor In addition to speculation about who will be around this time next year Newmarket council has been busy with a number of big projects Probably the most high profile is the final approval of the recreation complex which had been scrapped at the end of 1983 The comeback of the building included the deletion of the swimming pool and a change in location the result of a major land swap with the region and the towns foremost developer Glenway Builders However despite the cuts the projected a- year tax in crease remains in the plans Another major commitment was councils decision to snap up a 159acre property on the northeast edge of town in late May The land deal negotiated with Central Trust Mayor Twinney called for the town to operate its own in dustrial park In addition to the towns moves many developers chose 1984 as a year to get going homes started to appear rapidlv and Magna International proceeded with plans to locate factories here Perhaps the biggest impact was felt in the towns cinema business which grew in leaps and bounds in 1984 to 1 2 screens from one earls in the year And keeping pace with rest of the town The Era relocated to spanking new premises and joined the computer age Controversy as fired emotional Like many years before it 1984 was not troversy Over the last months the recreation commissioner Dan Sham
