Old Oakville lighthouse considered one of town's first landmarks What was once a prominent fixture that marked the mouth of the Sixteen Mile Creek at Lake Ontario, the old Oakville lighthouse now sits c o m f o r t a b l y, retired from its duty, at the grounds of the Oakville Yacht Squadron. There, at 1 Forsythe St., visitors can visit this historic relic, free of charge, during Doors Open Oakville on Saturday, Sept. 29. The history of the Oakville lighthouse is quite unique. The original lighthouse was built in 1837 and was in use until 1886 when a severe storm washed it away. Henry George, a contractor from Port Elgin, built the new lighthouse in 1889, which serviced the harbour until 1960 when it was deactivated and moved to its present site to be preserved. The 25-foot (eight-metre) high, hexagonal wood structure has a door and three windows on the lower section, all capped with classical pediments. The third storey is glassed in on all six tering the water within the creek. William Chisholm, considered to be the town founder, bought 960 acres of land that encompassed what would become the harbour. Chisholm recognized that the development of the area heavily relied on a viable harbour. To this end, he oversaw the construction of the original lighthouse in 1837, which marked the beginning of Oakville's first major industry as a bustling port town.
