Continued from page 6 Alex was about to call up to them when, all of a sudden, she saw a strange fish swimming towards her. She had read about it in one of her books about ocean legends... she remembered it was called the Poseidon fish. Alex's eyes were practically popping out of her head! She couldn't believe it! She swam toward the fish. Her parents were calling to her in the background, saying help was on the way, when suddenly Alex felt the sharpest pain she'd ever felt in her entire life. The Poseidon fish had bitten her in the leg! And she felt very strange. After a minute, she let out a scream -- instead of legs, she was looking down at a mermaid tail! Alex felt scared... but happy at the same time. She was happy because she had read that, in the olden times, people believed that anyone bitten by a Poseidon fish would become a mermaid or merman. And Alex had always dreamed of being a mermaid... and living in the undersea world of Atlantis. "Oh, how great it would be!" she thought. "But what if I told my parents, and they didn't want me to be a mermaid... and they took me to my doctor... and had her remove my mermaid powers?" "I'd better keep this a secret," she thought. "And that means I'd better hide!" So she dove under the flowing waters of the ravine pool. She watched another fish swimming around and suddenly noticed something... she could breathe underwater! "Oh my gosh," she thought. "How wonderful!" She jumped out of the water, and hid herself to dry on land. But first she called to her parents, so they would know she was OK. "Alex!?!" her parents were yelling. "Where are you? A firetruck is here, and the firefighters are putting a rope down! You need to climb up!" Alex couldn't think of a good excuse for delaying to climb up the rope. She still hadn't turned back into a human yet! Suddenly, Alex saw another flash before her eyes, and she was a human again! "I'm ready," she shouted. She quickly pulled herself up the rope, and reunited with her parents. · · · "Ahhh... what a beautiful view," said Alex, now a beautiful teenager. She was on a beach in Florida, where her parents had finally taken her for a vacation as a present for her 16th birthday. They said this was the beach they had found her on. Alex was SO excited to swim here. During the six years since the fish had bitten her, Alex had figured out that whenever water would touch her skin (except her mouth), she'd turn into a mermaid. (When she washed her face or had a shower, she had to always make sure to keep the bathroom door closed, so her parents wouldn't see.) She dove into the water, and quickly her transformation began. As her legs changed into a powerful mermaid tail, she picked up speed and then went underwater. She swam lower and lower, all the way to the ocean floor. Fish swam all around her. It was like being in the middle of a storm. She swam away into an underwater cave to get away. After a moment, something made her go further in. As her eyes got used to the darkness, she saw something on the floor. It was a big piece of coral. Part of it looked almost like a door, covered with seaweed. Was it? She swept off the seaweed, then started to pull at the door. It was hard work, but she eventually got it open. She took a deep breath and swam through it. She found herself inside another piece of coral, which was shaped like a tube. When she swam out the other end of the tube; she couldn't believe her eyes. It was like she was in a whole new world! Lights, buildings, and things she couldn't understand were everywhere. It almost looked like a city under the sea. Suddenly, she realized... it might be... Atlantis! She swam down further, her heart pounding with excitement. There were so many magical, glowing castles, she didn't know where to go. Finally, she headed for the one with the most decoration. She waited outside, and three mermaids came out and swam up to her. Alex couldn't believe how beautiful and graceful they were. As they stared at her, she felt a sudden longing in her heart. This all seemed so familiar. This must be where she was from. "You're one of us," one of the mermaids said, as the other two smiled and looked at Alex strangely. One of them reached out and gently stroked her hair. "What's your name, sister?" "Alex," said Alex. "Well, really my name is Alexandria... everyone just calls me Alex for Don't waste our money your money. The mermaids opened their eyes wide, and they swam away for a minute and whispered to each other. Alex tried to hear what they were saying, but she couldn't. Finally, they turned back to her. After a minute, one of them said, "The legends say that a lost mermaid named Alexandria will return one day to rule our kingdom... and help our people against our enemies." She reached out her hand. "Come and live here, princess Alex, in our magical kingdom. This is a happy day for all of us." As they swam back to the castle, Alex waited, and after a minute they turned around. "Aren't you coming, sister?" they asked. "You're home now." Alex didn't know why she didn't want to go. This had been her dream, ever since she was a little girl. But, now that the chance was here, she realized she couldn't do it. She couldn't leave her family. Maybe she just wasn't ready yet. After all, she was still only a teenager. It just didn't feel right... yet. "I'm sorry, my mermaid sisters," she said. "But I have another home too. I have to make the best of my life up there, and find out who I'm supposed to be. I have to give it a chance. And I love my family up there." She smiled. "Even my annoying little brother." The other mermaids looked so sad that Alex swam towards them to hug them goodbye. "But maybe someday I'll return, when I'm a little older. Then I can do whatever the legends say I'm supposed to do. I don't think I'm ready yet. I still have some growing up to do." She waved goodbye and turned and swam back up through the secret door. She was careful to close it behind her, and also remember where it was. Then she swam up to the surface and floated in the waves, looking at the beautiful scenery around her. Her parents and little brother were on the beach. Alex smiled, waved to them, and started to swim to shore. It was going to be a beautiful day.
