"This is a simple and long overdue step that will help families, reduce the risk of cancer and ensure health-care dollars can be saved in decades to come." The announcement of the impending provincial ban comes just a month after Oakville became the first municipality in Ontario to restrict tanning among youths under 18. The move proved unpopular with some local tanning businesses. During an August meeting, one tanning business owner said pre-tanning is important as it helps teens avoid severe sunburn when they go on holidays to warm climates. Annette Cyr, founder and chair of the Melanoma Network of Canada called that idea a myth created to sell unneeded tans. Ward 1 Councillor Ralph Robinson and Ward 2 Councillor Pam Damoff, each of whom played a role in bringing the new Oakville rule forward, said they were happy to see the Province taking a similar path. "It's just wonderful that the Province has stepped up to the plate on this," said Robinson. "This is something that really should have been in place all along. The same as the no smoking (policies) and all the other things we started here -- finally the Province got around to doing this as well." Damoff said the news was great coming just prior to Oakville's annual Terry Fox Run. "I'm over the moon," said Damoff. "I really honestly believe it was because of us the government was pushed to move on this. It let them gauge public opinion by letting us do it first and it was pretty obvious people were in support of it." Flynn said there is a chance the provincial tanning ban could become law before Christmas. The Oakville tanning ban has been in effect since mid-August.
