www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 19, 2012 · 22 Young people take centre stage at symphony concert By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Oakville Symphony Orchestra is getting back into the swing of things as it kicks off its new season. But the headliners of the upcoming concert are four young, local musicians. The orchestra's young people's concert, titled Youth in Concert, will be staged at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday (Sept. 23). To encourage families to bring their children to the show without having to worry about the little ones getting distracted during a long sit, the show will run for only 45 minutes. The concert will feature the talents of four young musicians: violinist Leslie Ashworth, 15, French horn-player Tina Shapero, 25, clarinet-player Slavko Popovic, 17, and soprano Clodagh Earls, 25. Ashworth has been playing violin since the age of four and has released her first album with original songs at the age of 12. She's performed with multiple orchestras across Canada. As a gold medal winner of the Passion of Music 2012 competition, she performed at New York's prestigious Carnegie Hall. In 2010, she was the Grand Prize Winner of the Canadian Music Competition. Shapero has been playing music since she was five. She completed her Honours Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of Western Ontario and recently completed her Master's of Music Performance degree at the University of Toronto. She has performed with a number of orchestras, including the KitchenerWaterloo Community Orchestra with which she travelled to Prague in 2006. Hamilton's Popovic has been playing clarinet since he was nine years old. He is a member of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and has been a member of other children's orchestras and has been a featured soloist with orchestras in Toronto and Hamilton. He also composes his own music. Earls is a rising star on the operatic and concert scene and has performed music theatre, opera and scene productions across Canada and Europe. She has a Master of Music in voice performance from the University of Toronto and an honours bachelor degree from the University of Western Ontario. The concert is put on by the initiative of the orchestra's Community Outreach Committee. Aside from providing entertainment, the concert continue's on the committee's education programs. The Centre is located at 130 Navy St. The show starts at 3 p.m. Regular tickets cost $12 or $6 for students. For tickets, visit www. oakvillecentre.ca. Actor/musician releases new EP Oakville's Kevin Krouglow has released a fivetrack EP called Try that is now available on iTunes or as a CD by mail order. The young actor and musician released the album recently after spending approximately a year producing it alongside music industry heavyweights Zack Werner (former Canadian Idol judge) and Tristan Avakian (guitarist for Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Rock of Ages, We Will Rock You and The Queen Extravaganza). Krouglow met Werner when he was auditioning for a talent television show, which would have featured Werner, but it never made it to production. However, the two talked and Krouglow said he played some of his music for Werner and so the pair began working on the album together. The local pop-rocker, a graduate of St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School, uses the stage name The Glow. For more information, visit www.theglow. bigcartel.com.
