Beginning next week, the library will offer ongoing settlement services to help navigate through essentials such as housing, language classes, employment and education. CITIZENSHIP PREP We also offer help in preparing for the citizenship test as well as filling out citizenship application forms, and English conversation sessions. Our programs cover topics such as immigration, job searching, income tax, financial literacy, and knowing your rights at work. New on Oct. 18 is the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration's Global Experience Ontario session for internationally trained individuals. This session will help those new to Oakville find employment in their profession or trade. The library is also offering a new presentation on Wednesday, Sept. 26, where newcomers will have the opportunity to learn and ask questions about all library services. We are told that the best thing the library offers to newcomers is the space. Since the libraries are open seven days a week, many newcomers come to the facilities to overcome a sense of isolation in a new country. A SHARED SPACE Families can get to meet one another, children read and play together, and students can study in a shared space away from the distractions at home. Free internet and Wi-Fi access enables customers to connect with O akville Public Library staff is always delighted when they learn that newcomers have been directed to the library as their first stop for information. The Oakville Public Library offers many services and resources aimed at helping newcomers settle and integrate in their new community, which all other community members can access as well. The library collaborates with three local organizations to help newcomers in their new lives: the Newcomer Information Centre, Halton Multicultural Council and Centre of Skills Development and friends and family or do research at any of our branches. The library also collaborates with both the Town of Oakville and the Region of Halton in meeting the needs of newcomers. Please check our Programs and Events Fall/Winter Guide on our website at www.opl.on.ca or pick up a print copy at your closest branch to see a full listing of newcomer programs and services.
