By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville residents living in the town's north-eastern section of the municipality may soon find themselves voting for Halton candidates in federal elections. The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario unveiled a proposed electoral map Monday for consideration at public hearings this fall. A significant increase in the country's population prompted a recalculation of the number seats within the House of Commons, which in turn has led to the boundary review. The province's population increase from 11.4 million in 2001 to 12.8 million in 2011, as recorded in the latest census, prompted the Ontario commission to recommend the addition of 15 electoral districts. "Population shifts and increases, efforts to honour existing municipal boundaries whenever possible, and the establishment of 15 new electoral districts have required substantial adjustment to Ontario's electoral map," said Justice George Valin, chair of the Ontario commission. For Oakville, the proposed readjustment, if it goes through, would mean the portion of the town's district bounded by Upper Middle Road, Eighth Line, Dundas Street and Winston Churchill Boulevard would be folded into the Halton electoral district. The rest of Oakville (north of Upper Middle Road) would remain within the Halton boundary, which would be significantly reduced in size, as the review calls for a portion of Burlington to break off and join with Milton to form its own federal electoral district.
