www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 29, 2012 · 26 Soccer club hands out annual scholarship awards Nine of the Oakville Soccer Club's top student athletes were awarded scholarships at the third annual OSC Scholarship Luncheon last week at Glen Abbey Golf Club. The James Baillie Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a female OSC player who is entering a post-secondary institution in Canada for the first time, was presented to Cara Hueston. OSC scholarships went to Alex Abrahams, Christian Douglas, Victoria Edgar, Kassandra Kadar, Anna Longrigg, Andrew Sahai, Sebastian Sciarra and Austin Wright. Recipients were selected based on their outstanding contributions to the game of soccer, the OSC and their community. The scholarships provide a financial award to help the student athletes reach their full potential. Former Hudson's Bay Company president and 1994 Commonwealth Games committee president and CEO George Heller was the keynote speaker at the luncheon. Following is more information on this year's recipients: Alex Abrahams Abrahams, a graduate of White Oaks, played in the OSC system for 15 years. A provincial team member for three years, Abrahams is studying journalism and marketing at Maine, where she will play varsity soccer with the Black Bears. Christian Douglas Douglas has played with the OSC since the age of seven and on OSC rep teams since age 10, winning two Ontario Cups during that time. The Holy Trinity grad will study kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario. Victoria Edgar Edgar has served as both a striker and a keeper during her 13-year tenure in the OSC system. A Holy Trinity graduate, Edgar will study health sciences at the University of Western Ontario and play keeper for the Mustangs. Kassandra Kadar An Abbey Park grad, Kadar has played with the OSC for 15 years and was also a volunteer instructor with the Town of Oakville's youth badminton program. Kadar will study design digital futures at OCAD University. Anna Longrigg Fifteen-year OSC veteran Longrigg also worked as a counsellor at OSC summer camps. A graduate of White Oaks, Sahai will study engineering physics at the University of California Berkeley. Sebastian Sciarra Sciarra has played with the OSC since the age of four, rep since the age of the 11 and also won the OSC's youth referee-ofthe-year award last season. The King's Christian graduate will study neuroscience at McMaster University. Austin Wright Wright was in the OSC for 13 years and played rep for seven of those, winning the Ontario Cup one season. The former T.A. Blakelock student will study commerce at Queen's University. Cara Hueston Hueston, a White Oaks grad, has played with the OSC since the age of five. Outside of soccer, she was the co-president of the Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving program. Hueston will study business administration at Wilfrid Laurier University. Shepley top Canadian at women's open Iroquois Ridge grad Jessica Shepley (pictured, left) was the top Canadian at last weekend's CN Canadian Women's Open golf tournament in Coquitlam, B.C. Shepley carded scores of 73, 74, 70 and 73 to finish with a four-round score of 290 (two-over par) and in a tie for 41st overall. Shepley's outing earned her $9,477. The 29-year-old was the lone Canadian to make the cut at the tournament, needing a bogey-saving putt on the 18th hole of the second round to qualify for the weekend. Shepley, who has played in nine LPGA tournaments this season, had not made a cut since April. Coincidentally, the top Canadian each year at the CN Canadian Women's Open receives the Sandra Post medal, an award named after the Oakville resident and eighttime LPGA event winner.
