The Shofar Factory event will take place on Sunday (Sept. 2) at River Oaks Community Centre. Traditionally, a shofar is a hollowed-out horn of a ram or similar animal and is blown on Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and at the end of Yom Kippur (day of atonement). In biblical terms, the instrument is traced back to the sacrifice of Isaac, when a ram took the place of Abraham's son on the altar. The shofar symbolizes repentance associated with Rosh Hashanah. This year, Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Sept. 16. The Shofar Factory is a hands-on workshop for youngsters, which is meant to be fun and educational. Experienced craftspeople will guide the children through a stepby-step process of making the instrument. The event is open to the general public. Admission is $5 per child. River Oaks is located at 2400 Sixth Line. People are asked to RSVP by contacting Sara Slavin at 905268-4432 or info@JewishOakville. com.
