ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Walkon lands university spot Lancers Foster confounds odds BYJOHNCUDMORE Drew Foster is proof scouting and recruit ing isnt everything Despite a very limited background in vol leyball the thirdyear human kinetics stu dent at the University of Windsor has evolved to become one of the leading liberos in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport as the Lancers chase their first playoff berth in six seasons The sixfoot oneinch Foster made the Lancers as a walkon in his first year at the school despite limited experience at a high calibre of play Nevertheless the 21 yearold Holland Landing resident has 161 digs in 17 matches fifth best in the CIS and tops in the Height at this level is ridiculous so I knew I wouldnt compete up there Not bad for a walkon who had no experi ence at playing the sports defensive position I knew since hadnt played club that wouldnt be a great recruiting tool said Foster a power hitter for the Huskies high school team 1 just found out when practice was and showed up the first day 1 knew the defensive side of controlling the ball was something I could do Height at this level is ridiculous so I knew I wouldnt compete up there It takes a certain quality to show up at the gym unknown and uninvited for tryouts Foster however impressed Lancers assistant coach Shawn Lippert who oversaw the first of a threeday series of workouts involving approximately 25 hopefuls This blondhaired kid was really getting some angles Lippert recalled He was just showing natural tendencies for a libero It takes years of training but he was getting a hand on every ball At the time I didnt even know his name he was just the blondhaired kid Hes never played club and comes from a mediocre high school team Hes not from a volleyballdominated area then comes in and DREW FOSTER goes through the roof Wed like to take credit for that but we cant Normally it takes years to develop and here he is Attending tryouts Foster concedes was an intimidating experience and certainly beyond the comfort zone for a kid whose main sport was playing goal in the East Minor Hockey Association I knew absolutely nobody the process or even if the starters were at the tryouts recalled Foster a key figure in the Lancers 1 6 season and drive to a playoff berth for the first time in six seasons 1 just knew there was lots of bodies It was very intimidating Timing was in his comer however The Lancers were in the midst of a 515 season with several of graduating seniors on the ros ter Drew must have experienced some kind of insecurity issue Lippert said All the other guys had played club ball or at high schools competing at or tripleA programs You spend so much time polishing your team then one falls into your lap Guys like Drew dont come along very often Last season with a youthful roster the Lancers posted a 7- 13 record but the coaching staff saw potential Our team was as green as it could possibly get last season but now something magical is happening Lippert said Foster is also training as a high jumper for the Lancers highly successful track and field team He competed twice at OFSAA during high school but caught the eye of Lancers coaches at an intramural meet NEWMARKET MINOR BALL HOCKEY Fun noncontact sport for boys and girls between the ages of 4- 1 as of January 110 Cost per player cash or cheque only Includes shirt shorts socks Walkin
