administered and eight drug- related charges have been laid However those charges did not necessari ly ail involve motorists driving while impaired by drugs Sgt Villamere recalled a recent traffic stop of a suspected drugimpaired driving While there wasnt enough evidence to charge the drivers with impairment Villamere laid drug possession charges Red flags include drowsiness for depres sants such as alcohol and crack has been known to make users agitated he said Sometimes its easy Sometimes they roll down the window and theres a cloud of smoke that comes out Villamere said But its often a less obvious indicator that raise an officers suspicions such as little eye contact or operative someone is Officer safety is also top of mind for drug recognition expert officers since a lot of the testing has to be done in dose quarters One of the tests for a drug recognition expert evaluation is an eye test and thats done in a dark room so youre locking your self in a room in pitch dark conditions with someone who is in custody You obviously dont want them to go sideways when theyre in a small room in the dark So youve always got another officer with you for officer safety purposes Just In case You sort of do your best to put them at ease as best you can Sgt Villamere said And to those who claim theyre more relaxed or a better driver after smoking a Thats absolutely false he York University psychology pro fessor Gordon said The old adage of no pain no gain is really like more pain no gain The study which surveyed Grade and students in regular gifted and fine arts streams in schools in the York Region District School Board found perfectionism offers no academic advantage for most pupils he said While gifted students who are perfection ists do excel slightly in math the achieve ment comes with a cost these children are more likely to feel unhappy compared to nonperfectionists surveyed The study also found gifted students are not more likely to strive for perfection com pared to their regular- stream peers despite the stereotypes linking the trait to intellec tual the pressure of trying to be perfect and fearing failure can make perfectionists second guess themselves and cause indeci siveness he said Also perfectionists find it hard to forget about past mistakes which only adds to the pressure Striving for perfection an unobtainable goal can set young students up for mental and physical hardships in the future he said adding the constant stress experienced when aiming for perfection has been linked to carry mortality eating disorders depres severe anxiety and in extreme cases suicidal tendencies It can also take a toll on relationships as the child will expect others to be perfect as well It only intensifies when the student reaches high school and is dealing with iden tity issues physical changes and the pressure to make it into a competitive postsecondary program he said It is not an easy problem to have and we need to heighti Striving to be perfect will wreak havoc FIND BALANCE Explain to your child the drfference between striving for excellence and striving fot perfection Take a day to make minor mistakes and show your child the world doesnt stop turning Participate ma number of activities that don focus on achievement Ensure your child is involved in a vanety of interests he enjoys such as music art or socializing with friends Speak to your child about his strengths to boost selfesteem Seek professional help when striving for perfect interferes with daily Irving a child selfesteem Aurora hild and Family Services director Simmons said A child will waste his time trying to be perfect and end up not being very rive she said It is really a sign of something going on that needs to be addressed Whether the stress is coming from exter nal forces such as family members or inter nalfy from the childs drive and perception understanding why the student pushes him self is the first challenge to finding a solution she said The key is to provide preventative such as having school guidance coun- trained to provide mental health sup port and teaching students it is not the end of the worid to make a mistake every
