Macholooking GMC Terrain stands out from the crowd METROLAND NEWSPAPERS CARGUIDE MAGAZINE Built in lngersoll Ont ai the CAM1 assembly plant alongside the popular Chevrolet Equinox the 2010 GMC Terrain is also making quite an impression on North American A fivepassenger compact cross over SUV the Terrain replaces the Envoy which was also built in soll The Terrain joins the Yukon and Acadia to complete the CUVSUV lineup for GMC in 2010 The Terrain comes in SLE and SET trim and with either front- or all- wheel drive Two engines are offend an Ecotec 24litrc DOHC inline direct injection fourcylinder and a 30litre 264 hp direct injection V6 Both engines are mated to sixspeed automatic transmissions My tester was the Terrain SET FWD the same vehicle that was recently entered in the Best New CUVSUV to 60000 cat egory at the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada TestFest to determine Car and Utility Vehicle of the Year The Terrain finished fifth out of seven vehicles in an extremely close category won by the Volkswagen Touareg TD1 Clean Diesel Second was the Audi followed by the MercedesBenz GLK The Lexus 350 was fourth with the Volvo XC60 and ZDX trailing behind the Terrain At the Terrain was far and away the least expensive vehicle in its class The firstplace Touareg had a sticker price of 56950 while the Audi and Mercedes models were also priced north of 45K Considering the price differential the Terrain fared extremely well in overall voting as it did on my score- card This is a vehicle with fit and that offers excellent passenger and cargo room while at the same time delivering fuel economy at the top of its class While the Terrain and Equinox are very similar and share many of the same components the Terrain has a much more macho look to it with a squared off front end flat grille with chrome header bar and bulging Honda S2000 still a joy after decade of few changes This is the last year for the Honda S2000 but the car remains the quintessential modern take on a roadster- style spurts car a performance icon for the Honda brand with racetrack- ready power and perfo character There was no real reason to test the Honda S2000 Outside of incremental modi fications and annual new colours selected by Honda Canada there have been no recent changes to the car In fact the S2000 is virtu ally a dead duck Honda having announced earlier this year that 2009 would be the last year of pro duction for this iconic tribute to the classic roadster formula So testing a dying breed may seem pointless in a way But there are exceptions to every rule 1 just want to say goodbye to an old friend I told the Honda folks when I called in my request I doubt they were surprised at my plea Over the years my annu al bookings had become a bit of ap inhouse joke at Honda Canada Do you think the new colour this year might be a little faster they would tease me every spring as I hemmed hawwed and verbal ly scrambled for some argument of strategically located behind the front axle a factor that along with well thoughtout architecture resulted in a nearperfect 5050 weight dis tribution balance Early complaints were quickly corrected An initial plastic back light was replaced by a glass rear window with defroster And other refinements over the years includ ed suspension revisions better audio a drive-by- wire throttle sys tem and
