member retires Continued from hiring of a professional librarian according to Mrs Campbell With the post of chief librarian created many duties of the board such as the big job of book buying were given to the librarian In the early days board members along with other library staff Eva Allan and Nellie Little played an active rote in selecting books The task of book buying was a favorite responsibility of Mrs Campbells The wife of Elman Campbell who operated a Main St bookstore here for many years she was an able book purchaser and en joyed the buying trips to Toronto or the visits from salesmen with the lastest editions As well as the change in the method of buying Mrs Campbell noted the sharp rise in the cost of books Where we used to be able to buy a hard covered book for we now pay she said In recent years the library earmarks about from its budget for book buying BIG BUSINESS TODAY The total library budget last year was some half a million dollars compared to the first budget of Mrs Campbell faced Today it is big business she pointed out Without a doubt Mrs Campbell said striving to stay within the budget was the biggest headache endured by the board each year Whether we were going to get through the year with the amount of money we had was always a concern she said The board was hit with another major concern last year when unionized workers went out on strike As well as the parade of placard carrying workers and supporters past her Park Ave home Mrs Campbell who was then serving as vicechainran received about phone calls in regard to the strike Some people were nice and some were not so nice she recalled As well as dealing with employee problems the board has experienced oc casional friction among its members ac cording to Mrs Campbell Although she has only missed about three meetings in her 23 years service she recalled deliberately staying away from one meeting with another member to protest the actions of a fellow member Mrs Campbell told The Era she did not want to rehash the problems but admitted It was a very bad year Looking back she said she may have experienced less difficulty if she had lobbied other members on certain issues but said that just was not her style I guess I would not have made a good member of council she joked NAME TAGS One issue that the veteran has not made any headway in although it has been debated on numerous occasions is the suggestion that library employees wear name tags Mrs Campbell said she and former board member Doris Blair agreed that employees with name tags would be more easily identified but could never get the majority of the board to go along with the request I had my last shot at that one in the fall she said Another suggestion that Mrs Campbell said she did not receive backing for is reverting to the old system where library patrons are allowed as many books as they want and it is depleting the library she said Another suggestion that Mrs Campbell said she did not receive backing for is reverting to the old system where library patrons were only allowed three books out at a time Now patrons are allowed as many books as they want and it is depleting the library she said Although Mrs Campbell has a few- specific criticisms of the library she said she agrees with most people that it is an excellent library Mrs Lo has done a good job there is no doubt about it she said She said the library has shaped up considerably due to the efforts of the chief librarian PRAISE FOR EMPLOYEE She also praised longtime employee Marlene Best who is the bookkeeper- secretary I think Marlene is another one like me said Mrs Campbell She enjoys her work You could not have anyone better she added Although Mrs Campbell who is in her late sixties has enjoyed being a board member said she is ready to take it easy and catch up on some reading and also watching her favorite hockey team the Toronto Maple Leafs Throughout her Life Mrs Campbell has been extremely active in various groups including the Women Institute and IODE in Peterborough where she lived before marrying Campbell in 1947 In 1980 Newmarkets year she and her husband were named Queen and King of town She was also a 25year veteran of the CNIB here and a longtime member and former chairman of the local association for the mentally retarded READING As she is retiring from the library board Mrs Campbell has given up active duty in all but one club For over years she has been a member of the Newmarket Reading Club The small group of women meet twice monthly to books they have read and with her love for books as strong as ever the retiring library board member has no plans to retire from the club Although Mrs Campbell officially retired from the board last month she at tended last nights library
