Association A letter to the York County Board of Education from the association says school boards should begin to immediately phase out tackle football and replace it with another potentially less dangerous sport The association pointed out the high risk for often immediately undetectable injuries to the neck and spine caused by heavy body contact The association said adolescent bodies are not sufficiently developed to withstand the strain placed on them by what sports writers insist on referring as bone- crunching tackles The letter went on say public health must assume priority in the school system Some of the dangers listed as being associated with football are per- School contract awarded AURORA Genan Construction Ltd has been awarded a contract in the amount of for construction as now played AURORA The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation wants the York County Board of Education to rescind Policy no regarding emergency school closing The teachers made their displeasure over the policy known to the board in a letter singed by Chris VanStraten president of District School board policy 66 states in part that schools must remain open in severe weather to accommodate children who may show up at school no matter what the weather The executive of District OSSTF is of the opinion the letter states that while there is some merit in the argument that schools must remain open such a posture introduces unnecessary hazard to the majority of students and staff The OSSTF said it believes an appropriate delegation of authority is needed so that a firm declaration may be issued to the effect that a the system will be closed an area will be closed or a school or schools will be closed The letter also says a section of the policy is in direct conflict with The Education Act in that discretion for attendance in inclement weather does not rest with the parents or guardian The policy says it does The teachers federation also took exception to the wording of the policy which requires the teachers to make every reasonable effort consistent with personal safety to be on duty Teachers as professionals and District as a professional organization feels that this statement implies a lack of trust in its em ployees on the part of the board said the letter With the administrative procedures set down in this policy the board appears to be
