you the lazy type who meanders in the passing lane blocking faster moving traffic Or perhaps youre the aggressive type that fellow we all know who roars up on other vehicles rides the bumper for miles decides to fight charge in court and presents a novel because the American gallon is from the Canadian the American says believed that posted speed limits on roads should be converted in American cars Thus he was over the limit but only amount of difference between the US gallon the Canadian gallon The Judge Is not The charge stands but the judge does one thing the American will be allowed 1 his fine in US dollars I did not make that story up It happened a year or so ago on Highway and in an tin- courtroom I am reminded of the when I read about the fuss over metrication on our roads Many people are angry about the change to metric signs which according to the province will go into effect Sept If you are caught speeding after that day your ticket will show over the speed limit instead of miles i i In York Region there has been a fuss over metrication too Teens rude riders she says My husband and I have not been to the Exhibition for years until Senior Citizens Day Aug We really of one of the townspeople I am handicapped and use a walker to get around My husband drives me where I have to go and it works out fine I have some mobility and so- now am luckier than a lot of other han dicapped But I know a lot of handicapped dont even bother going out into the town if they have pets I refuse to lock my small dog in a car in a parking lot where heat and kids disturb it I dont leave him at home because he doesnt like being alone Last week at the March of Dimes wheelchair race held in Upper Canada Mall we had a bad experience Multiplication for metrication magic It is interesting to note the excitement and mental conflict that has arisen regarding the new metric signs in town and on the highway May I suggest a very simple method by which these anxieties may be relieved by giving an swers that are more than accurate enough for most occasions Simply it is this To convert Km to miles multiply by 6 or multiply by 6 and put in decimal point To convert miles to Km multiply by or multiply by 16 and put in decimal point With the millions being spent on these days this will afford a wonderful opportunity to actually use some information taught at school PETER STUART Sutherland Ave Newmarket Why not a seer I want to congratulate the Era on the New series Dining out in York The area has been waiting a long time to spark a culinary con science into our restaurateurs It seems the Era is instituting an honest to goodness entertainment page with theatre dining social news and more May I make one humble suggestion In lieu of a regular horoscope or to round it out how about a local water diviner cum soothsayer At one shot heshe could not only solve the towns water shortage but could give out linear aspects and agricultural hints to the rural population ROBIN FOSTER Newmarket I- ffPRONV V- My husband carried our dog in his jacket while watching the proceeding The dog behoved very well as usual The security guard mere lapped my husband on the shoulder and asked him to get the out He told him he would leave with the dog but it would mean leaving me alone and he didnt want to do it The guard didnt realize the situation at first and threathened to call the police He told my husband the man who made the complaint was once asked to take his dog out of the mall The guard was clearly embarrassed But the man who made the complaint wouldnt even ask us himself He was too cowardly Our dog always comes shopping with me and has never been the subject of controversy before Needless to say the March of Dimes evening which could have been enjoyable and enlightening was ruined for us Which makes my point What about a blind person whose dog isnt allowed to come into a restaurant My limitations put me in the same position I am angry and hurt by experience If the man who reported the dog wishes to discuss things he is welcome to phone me MRS NORA RICHARDSON CHA A THAT J NO Re The Era en courages letters from all readers Con tributions should be signed with a full name and address and submitted to 30 Charles St Newmarket Newmarket bus at pm Teenagers made real sure that they got on the bus first so that by the time the bus pulled away it seemed as though the only ones standing were senior citizens plus a young lady with a small child and another young lady who was alone My husband and I were close to the back of the bus so when I saw a vacant seat at the very back I started for It but a teenage girl would not let me have it telling me that it was for someone else The back section was filled with teenagers as I swayed to get back to where my husband was standing about that time a boy stood up to offer his seat I did not sec him my husband told me later Later the girl that had moved over to let me sit down sat on the floor I would like to thank these two teenagers There were about or teenagers at the back What a pity that there were only two that were thoughtful The young lady with the small child was standing until someone got off in the Aurora area and then she was able to sit down with her child who by this time had fallen asleep on the floor My husband and I are very fond of children Our many teenage grand children have always treated us with kindness and respect At one time it would have pleased us very much to have the com pany of those youngsters on the bus but instead we were very happy to get off the bus at Newmarket The back seat was used for love making and although they were sit ting right under a no smoking sign the air was blue with smoke when the bus lights went on I could hardly believe such a mess could be made by such a small group of people It is no wonder the bus fares go up with their extra maintenance What a pleasure it would have been to see ihose teenagers giving up their seals to women with small children and the older generation ALICE CASS Newmarket Speed limits in changing to metric numbers will be changed on some regional roads Speed limits in many cases will be increased slightly to reflect round numbers In language For instance 30 miles per hour becomes kilometres per hour which is actually miles per hour Youean drive at kilometres i per hour on a road where you used to drive only miles per hour That s what is However if you see a sign that says kph a road where you are accustomed to driving at miles per hour SLOW DOWN You can only drive at 375 miles per hour now Yes there will be confusion over metrication for some time There will be problems York Regional Police and the are gearing for them They will apparently issue metric tickets to those with newmodel cars with metric speedometers or installed a metric speed converter on their cars They will issue the oldfashioned miles-per- hour tickets to those who have not metricated Oh to be caught with a ticket In ones possession How mortifying An outcast from the metric society It will cost you more to speed in our new metric world too Instead of a buck a mile If you are caught speeding up to ten miles over the limit you will be charged per km from over the limit Is that kmh or Unless you are caught speeding by the OPP They unlike York police will charge ojily per km from or Do your speeding with us seems to be the thrust lower OPP fine Morning sir says the officer he approaches the car May I see your driver licence ownership insurance certificate and metric converter I seem to have misplaced mine You were driving 35 kilometres per hour over the limit You have no metric verterHow about a slide rule Yes I am a York Region police officer and it will cost you 125 per kilometre if you are convicted No I dont know how to convert points into metric I think they stay the same J No to the best of my knowledge you dont get more points under the metric system just he old 15 points You want to be charged by an OPP officer because this is a provincial Yes I realize they charge 25 cents less per kilometre No I WONT give you the difference right now in cash Choir drew crowds J it May I take this op portunity to thank the Era for the coverage of the visit of the Toronto Diocesan Boys Choir to St Pauls Newmarket As a result of your publishing several items St Pauls was filled to capacity for a memorable service Thank you for your interest and cooperation MARRIOTT St Pauls You say the sign used to say six now it says kilometres to Newmarket so you thought you had to drive faster No thats pot the first time Ive heard that argument today I met an American who was driving because he saw km on the sign J said he thought km meant men and decided he could drive just as fast as Canadians No I didnt think it was funny Yes in a cell just down the street J Metric makes you tired too I dont know how many times Ive travelled home after a long I rip down the and took the highway exit I used to always heave a sigh of great relief when I saw that little green arrow saying Newmarket The trip is just about over What a shock I received not too long when I looked up and saw Newmarket to anal another little sign km tacked on beneath new mileage figure Weary Just felt so weary Another 10 km to go Will I NEVER get home There is some for metrication though intend to shorten my column by paragraph or two beginning in September just tell The Era its my new metric You dont think theyll metrically do you j
