Information Early Birds pm Regular games pm By ROLAND G The new Stage Coach Restaurant and Tavern rose from the ashes of the previous establishment on Don Mills at the Stderoad and if ever the disaster of a major fire was turned into the start of a success story this must be it The old roadside tavern had carried many faces moat pretty tired before the present management took it over and obtained a liquor licence But they were never able to shake the truckstop image place burned to the ground last winter The new Stage Coach Is a different ball game an attractive Mexican- flavored building with a single large dining room done in the plaster and beam style of a good Mexican inn Three partners operate the business and each presides over his own domain kitchen bar and door providing that extra touch of care only an owner can give At a glance the menu seems pretty standard steaks roast beef surf and turf seafood and a veal dish Its only when you begin to eat that you begin to realize you are In for a culinary treat The menu lists the usual appetizers but one glance at the salad bar as you come in the door and you are not likely to glance much further at the appetizer column With dinner you can help yourself to a plate of green salad macaroni salad potato salad as well as pickled beets dills pickles and a garbanzos salad and all were fresh and delicious Thick rich homemade dressings sat in large crocks on the counter This was another expedition en famille two small children in tow and we have always round that a good test of the service in any establishment Our waitress at the Stage Coach left nothing to be desired When we puzzled over how to avoid or dering two complete dinners for two small and yet also slay away from nam burgers she volunteered the suggestion that the veal cutlet and spaghetti dish favored by our young man was plenty large enough to be divided and it was It was delicious the cutlet piquant and covered with melted cheese the spaghetti what the Italians term al cooked only until is very slightly resistant The childrens meal arrived first ah excellent ploy to keep young minds occupied and an extra baked potato miraculously appeared when the twoyearold announced she covetted dads Dads had come with Benefit ride set largest rib of beautiful rare roast beef this side of Texas It was juicy and very tender third selection at our table was a Mexican pepper steakV as distinguished from the Stige Coach pepper steak which was also on the was beed in brandy at the table tender juicy and liberally sprinkled with extra hot pepper and garnished with green peppers It too came with potato Homemade cherry cheesecake and good coffee topped off our meal and the children had ice cream The bill for three meals split four ways plus a carafe of wine and two Cokes came to a little over the to range I indicated in a previous column I would shoot for when dining out with the family But every penny of that little bit over was well spent for it brought a memorable eating experience and one we are sure we will often return to There is something about a restaurant operated by an expert owner or in this case three expert owners that cannot be duplicated outside a good mothers kitchen The food has that little extra touch of care that brings perfection and the service is as though a gracious hostess were welcoming you to her home Heres how the main items in our bill broke down veal and spaghetti Mexican pepper steak roast beef cherry cheese cake a piece Mall Kilty Chester and Doc are all back on air
