However the who ran a stop sign with one in front of my car which had the right of way was treating the situation rather lightly It appears with the increase in popularity of the bicycle among young and old there has also been an increase in the complete disregard of traffic rules in most cases the majority of bike riders taking to travelling in the direction of oncoming traffic and other unsafe country To give them more outdoor experience send them abroad We send them insane Now were going to have them slogging around In conservation areas staring the of Nature in the eye Ive got hunch theyve already done that if you follow me Markham Trustee Stephen Taylor who seems to be related to the Rothschild or the Rockefellers way he talks plumped for the Board developing its own facility regardless of the time and cost A big land- assembly caper land being on the present bargain list Theres a man wholl go far Lets hope its a helluva long way from where he can dip into our pockets Although Board is without a policy of commitment to this program and is generally vague about it there was realization of the prime the vital need to budget regardless- To get its hands on the money So they did voting to spend about on introducing the children the country children to the birds and the bees why is the grass green and the sky blue It was considered prudent to avoid study of why taxpayers faces vary from fiery red to ashen grey Their haste to budget was motivated by fear Trustees Quirk advocated rushing in and on pointing out that unless the board picked up its option at Scanlon Conservation it would lose it thereby facing the disgrace of involuntarily reducing its spending Apparently the school board of Metro Toronto is just lying in wait ready to in and pick up any unused days for its own wee bairns Its all part of a sort of spending contest between rival school boards So like ladies at a knickers sale Trustees Quirk horrified by thoughts they might be left without any spread terror thro the trustees heading the rush to put clamps on the funds for optioning days whether theyre needed or not Who can plumb the depths of education in Ontario Let us be thank ful for this further example of the dedication of school trustees to the principles of culture and economy Let us our selves visit some quiet conservation area To be violently sick SID1LBRITTON Aurora Will the manager of the Ontario Hydro office in Newmarket issue a terse press release in of next year saying You wont Hydro to kick around any more If he did choose to paraphrase Richard Nixon hed be justified as the impending con version of all of Newmarket to Newmarket Hydro has been an election issue since 1971 Thats when parts of East Gwillimbury King and Whitchurch were incorporated into Newmarket under regional government Hydro did not recognize that incorporation actually it was the province that did nothing and those people have continued paying their hydro direct to Ontario Hydro at roughly per cent more than those on Newmarket Hydro Now according to Mayor Bob this will all be changed possibly by January of Another election issue bites the dust Well all be paying our bills to Newmarket Hydro in that onestorey building beside our own version of Newmarket Falls at Water Street and the foot of Main Watching the progress of that debate over the past few years and listening at candidates nights to wouldbe councillors explain how they would force the change reminds one of this I towns first hydro debate Back in the late hydro any hydro did not exist in Newmarket and its eventual troduction was not without debate anger public meetings and even some nonsense At that same corner where Newmarket Hydro now stands a erected a tallow candle set in a stable lantern Others turned barrels upside down on Main is Street and stuck candles on them The town was for most part in total darkness in those days and according to the History of Newmarket by the late Ethel jj Onecitizcn recalls that the streets were so dark he waited for the next flash of lightning that he might see to gauge his mediate steps In 1868 William Roe presented a petition to council signed by residents and asking streets certain of thwn be lighted with coalg oil lamps Much of the downtown area was so lit but progress dictated that the new electric power was soon to come In a fire destroyed the Cane paint shop Cane did not want another fire and so installed the firstever electric power plant in town for own use In the Fire and Light Committee- chaired by that same Cane recommended j that it was advisable to light the town by A public meeting was held and the citizens asked to approve an expenditure of for installation of a complete and firstclass electric light plant A Mr James Allan described in the book as a weighty citizen suggested was not enough and that the town contract to rent hydro from one who operated his own plant Eight downtown intersections were lit this fashion but according to the history nook This latest effort did not measure up tq the expectation of the Council and in the meantime mill was burned Early Newmarket if one reads this in teresting little book was always on fire Its a wonder there is still something left today Anyway in 1893 the town asked for tenders from the Light Heat and Power Company and J W Campbell a new company formed in Newmarket They also agreed to consult ah expert on the matter Over Ihe next few years various plans for hydro were discussed tried dropped faded out and in one case in 1913 the entire council resigned over the defeat of a bylaw on the hydro issue Ive touched on this briefly in an earlier column but those were the days when public meetings and displays would be held by pet ing firms to try and sell their particular form of hydro One such meeting saw two competitors hydro and something called the Metropolitan using electric toasters to toast bread Citizens were asked to compare the taste of the toast A toast taste test a The Metropolitan offer was cheaper and more attractive to the town but for a reason not explained in the history book was defeated by the bylaw Council resigned and the new council in accepted the offer of the Metropolitan on new bylaw That situation existed until 1930 when the company ceased operations Hydro took oyer then I wonder if they conducted meetings then in candlelight And did the council hopefuls promise to put a chicken in every pot and a burner under every pot of chicken So this January we may see a reduction of hydro rates for those areas of town now under Ontario Hydro And when it happens I think Ill take my trusty tallow candle down to Main and Water Streets Then Ill light it outside the office of Jim Beadle of Newmarket Hydro J I il
