News Editor RICHMOND HDLL For a novice school board trustee Bill Monroe is right in the thick of things Although hes serving his first year on the board the Richmond Hill representative heads the trustee team that is currently negotiating contracts with the secondary and elementary school teachers It wasnt just fate that the Richmond Hill firefighter was named to the team and selected to chair it from the time he was first elected last fall he set his sights on becoming both a member and chairman of the team I didnt make any promises he recalled last week What he did do was display an eagerness that had already become apparent in his role with the Richmond Hill Firefighters Association A member of the department for only three years he headed the firefighters group during his initial year with the department Last year he chaired the negotiations team as a member of the labor side rather than the management post hes currently serving on the board team and this year as president of the association he served on the firefighters association negotiations team that completed its talks just before school board contract meetings began That the school board negotiations post isnt the most prestigious for a trustee became apparent earlier this year when two members resigned from the team King trustees Coburn and Dorothy Zajac resigned Mrs Coburn after being cleared of possible conflict of interest by a county court judge and Mrs following a dispute over membership in a trustees association At the outset the committee was short- handed noted Mr Monroe We had six we were one short to begin with he explained The team itself decided that the minimum number theyd need present to negotiate properly would be three With only four members Mr Monroe trustee Bob separate pointed out that the annual general meeting to which few ever come is the proper place to question Mr Hughes about policy Once again Thursday Mr Hughes reaffirmed his objective to establish a haven for old horses in the area Guild vicepresident Ursula Ostick questioned Why land here where it is very expensive Mr Hughes replied that he was looking not only to the immediate objective but also to a good investment If our predecessors had had the forsight to buy here we wouldnt have to worry he commented Mr Hughes also noted that the more remote the land the higher the trucking costs pressures eased a bit but the team still doesnt know if it will be holding meetings during the summer 1 suppose it just depends on how close the two sides get said the Richmond Hill trustee It isnt just the trustees who are in volved the committee chairman stressed I consider that staff members are a part of that committee he explained praising the involvement ad- ministration represen tatives Ken Stanley and Ted Smart In effect we still have six members on our team four trustees and two staff members While Mr Stanley recently resigned his human resources superintendents post to become a master teacher in geography he will remain active in negotiations as long as necessary the board has announced Mr Monroe said Mr Stanley is expected to remain on the team until sometime near the start of the next school year Bill Monroes reluctance to talk negotiations specifics doesnt extend to the tone of the contract talks As a group weve come to work together well he said proudly of the two sides I think weve created a lot of goodwill between the teachers federations and the boards Not that the Rich- mond Hill trustee is happy with every aspect of the boards operation There are very few things
