musical drama and personal witness NEWMARKET York County Hospital treats at least one often two cases of child beating per month In a year there are at least to cases on the records The Era sat in on a professional group who discussed the facts and figures of the problem recently and learned some interesting facts The term child abuse often conjures up images of cruel people who do dreadful things to their children Not so according to experts who spoke to a Newmarket meeting recently In reality those nice people down the street may be child abusers That is parents with compulsive behaviour that they themselves do not un derstand and cannot change without professional help There is a recently- formed committee in the NewmarketAurora area which has taken on the task of educating the public about this common yet misunderstood behaviour Headed by York County Hospital Manager of Social Work Jean Simmons the team is comprised of Early Child Hospital representative Richmond Hills Family Life Centre counsellor Eleanor Chambers York Region Aid Society executive Cole and a York Region public health nurse The committee hopes to become an alternative to legal procedures in volving the police and Childrens Aid Society It will act as a supportive liaison between the family and social workers public health nurses and counsellors The group meets every second Thursday to view and discuss educational videotapes meet professionals in volved with the specific legal and medical aspects of child abuse in order to formulate an approach to the public and define the problem and its prevalence The committee seeks the cooperation of the community to help identify cases before damage is done to define and deal with the problem before the involvement of law and medical services becomes necessary To this point the York County Childrens Aid Society has dealt with the problem single- handedly but has also had to deal with a less than friendly image which may have deterred parents from seeking their help The Com munity Child Abuse Committee is hoping to share some of the burden and increase resources that are open to parents without any stigma at tached Lines being opened between parents and nonpunishing organizations The Committee can offer concrete relief programs and make realistic suggestions for abusive parents such as babysitters counselling establishing visits from the local public health nurse in a trusting relationship by a phone contact hotline or in formation about the Rich mond Hillbased Parents Anonymous group The stress is on identification un derstanding and resolution of the problem at whatever stage the abuse may be Emotional support is given to the parents to understand that their problem is not peculiar to them alone and that help is there Since child abuse is not normally a psychiatric problem the counsellors the peer groups and ever- available relief sources are the most effective means of resolving the crisis and coping with their life situations So it is not an isolated problem concerning certain stereotypical city core areas or to any socioeconomic group The problem spans the whole spectrum of economics background intelligence
