I i ft to the Editor av A deal reader The proposed sale of the Alexander School to the Town of Newmarket for or any nominal sum either ignorance on the part of the trustees or a political ploy for local gain When the Regional Board was formed all assets and liabilities of the former boards were by law passed to the new board Many properties since that time have been declared surplus by the They died Regional Board In many cases the local Municipality tried to purchase the facility for a token fee In every case in the past these offers were rejected usually to howls of But we paid for that school The reasons for the rejections which are still valid are these the local Municipality paid a portion of the cost of the school but the Province paid a larger portion the replacement school is being paid for by AURORA A Sutton Public School teacher has been named president of the York County Elementary Teachers Association of Federations Ted Smith a Grade teacher was named to the post during the organizations general meeting here late last month As president of the 32yearold teacher will head an organization represen ting all 1200 elementary school teachers and principals in the York will continue and even expand the cooperation and mutual trust elementary teachers have attempted to establish with both trustees and ad ministrative staff of the public school board Other members of the new executive include past president Hurley of King George building Stuart Scott Public School first vice- president Dean Bodkin second vicepresident Wendy Van James Robinson School presidents post for the past two years Mr Smith joined the York board in after previous teaching ALL residents of York in eastern so you could vote reader I apologize for not thinking of this thought before the present election taking place today Great men gave their lives and their time and more pitifully many are lying in hospital for life from the first and second war so we the fortunate could have the privilege of voting for our choice of type of government Had we lost either war I feel the public should be reminded that they would have NO choice of type of moil had these same men not sacrificed their lives in their prime of life we today would not have the privilege of voting for our choice I feel personally that any one that did riot vote today has slapped our veterans dead and alive in the face and led us dammed fools to fight for a privilege we felt important and you feel today that it was a waste of time and lives Anyone who did not vote today should hang their head in shame Being an original of Newmarket our slogan was Vote your choice but Vote JACK GROVES Newmarket Appreciates care taken Region there is not a surplus school in every Municipality so such a sale benefits a small percentage of taxpayers at the expense of the majority 4 a sale at market price would provide funds to benefit all taxpayers by either reducing taxes or increasing services These facts should be known to all trustees and are known to the Ministry of Education As it stands when the Ministry turns down the proposal as I think it will it will be so easy for the local trustees to make the Ministry the fall guy It would be more honorable by far for the trustees to not only face the facts but to ex plain the facts I think every area should have a museum and expanded library services but only to the extent that they are af fordable Certainly such local sovices should not be at the expense of every taxpayer in the Region RR1 Mount Albert Ontario In addition to teaching in elementary schools in Newmarket Markham and Sutton Mr Smith has held a number of teacher federation positions in the region Following the Aurora Legion meeting Mr Smith expressed hope that the new executive S HA RON Lieutenant Governor Pauline McGibbon will be the guest of honor Nov at the Remembrance Day services Mount Albert United Church town council here teamed last week Mayor Angus Morton
