J Oat Wei Ay J AURORA They tost but they won little disappointment in Liberal headquarters Thursday asonly minutes after the polk closedit became clear that candidate Jim Wilson would finish second Some of the younger faces most of them children of longtime Liberal supporters and relatives of most of Wilsons campaign workers showed sadness and a tittle confusion The younger workers had taken the campaigning seriously and the failure of their first political effort seemed confusing for them Others apparently seasoned campaigners made a game of the returns betting for soft drinks on how many of the poles might fall Wilsons way Among the older workers the mood was one of relief and satisfaction at a fight wellfought their candidate had entered the race an unknown He was hampered by his refusal until late in the campaign to deal in specifics with local issues and by the generally unfavorable press given his party leader Stuart Smith Under the guidance of rookie manager Paul Nelson the local riding ran a promotion of their candidate that centred on his eagerness to work on behalf of the riding Wilson worked steadily at canvassing most of the 210 polling districts He put his effort into meeting voters making his face familiar and leaving them with party information to read at their leisure It was a campaign that left speechmaking about issues until dose to the election and the strategy apparently worked In any case there was an air of relief at the Yonge headquarters as both campaign workers and organizers took pleasure in the strong second their candidate placed- the returns poured In to the redandwhite of fice workers slowly arrived and gathered around a portable television brought in for the evening to follow the partys provincial fate As Metro Toronto results showed early upsets for all Liberal members but Margaret Campbell there was disappointment and a clear fear that the remainder of Ontario would fall as well But as Smiths own riding was reported to be won and as Liberal seats were both held and won in other ridings faces began to beam At the Hodgson reception room in Newmarket both losing candidates arrived briefly to congratulate the winner pose for pictures and then return to celebrate with their own workers So was it worth the effort for Wilson who took a leave of absence from his sales job to work long hours and walk through most of the riding shaking hands with task difficult for all but the most outgoing of people j ace And was it worth it to the local riding who spent about much of it still to be on a cam paign they didnt really think theyd win Yes To both questions Wilson a virtual unknown as the campaign began managed to gather 9660 of the 3262s votes cast He has said repeatedlyand with apparent sin- ceritythat he regrets noneof it And that hes set logo again In or sooner There were quiet cheers at the victories quiet sighs at the losses and general disdain for political commentators who seemed surprised that a minority government was about to return They needed a computer to tell them that one older worker asked His question drew snickers from most people around him But the evening officially became a celebration party only when Wilson arrived his wife AnneMarie in tow The workers cheered him rushed forward to shake hands and assured him that the secondplace finish was in fact a victory Wilson himself told reporters that it was the best the party had expected when you dont have the kind of money that Hodgson did to run the campaign But there was no bitterness in the comments of either the candidate or his workers and all shook hands and patted backs in a round of self- congratulation Then it was off to headquarters where candidate Ian Scott was just winding up his thanks to his own party faithful The men shook hands joked a bit about how they would be pleased to go at it all over again hinting that they might soon have the opportunity and departed to the strains of disco music ELECTION NIGHT HANDSHAKE Theyre not all winning smiles but theyre smiles nonetheless as defeated can didates Ian Scott and Jim Wilson shake hands in front of incumbent Bill Hodgson at the
