I Keswick Wei Jane I ELECTION REPORT Early start as Scott es to Hodgson By BOB MARTIN Era News Editor NEWMARKET Ian Scotts been getting up early these days I It Huron Heights Secondary School librarian not only holds down his regular York Region public school post but also manages to fit a full schedule of campaigning into his day The New Democratic Party candidate in York North he has hopes of unseating veteran Progressive Conservative Bill Hodgson in next weeks election To offset Conservative Hodgson Helps People image thats won the PC every election battle hes faced New Democratic organizers are taking their campaign to those very same people Thats what were aiming for as much contact as possible Mr Scott told Era after meeting nearly 30 voters during an early morning minute stint mingling with passengers awaiting Canadian Nationals morning commuter run This particular day begins at the hopefuls home before 7 am and ends more than hours later In between he meets more than voters in the opening hour of his campaign day attends a high school all candidates meeting participates in a union meeting in Concord plots the pratfalls and benefits of the morning high school session in down town Newmarket spends time in informal yet intense strategy sessions and still puts in nearly a full day at Huron Heights Through it all it becomes very apparent that Ian Scott the candidate is a man run by committee While he asserts some his own priorities as far as scheduling is concerned the ultimate decisions are left a group headed by campaign chairman John Hunter Even a decision on what particular photo of Mr Scott should be used in promotion is out of the candidates hands Instead his job is to go out and meet the people and let them know theyve met a real life politician ap parently interested in them Its a job that Ian Scott does well Arriving at the Newmarket CN station at 705 am he circulates quickly among the awaiting commuters Anovicetothisparticularstyleof campaigning he does well moving at a pace that doesnt intimidate the few on hand that dont want to be bothered by politics but taking time to discuss issues with those willing As Mr Scott returns to his car for the short drive to the Go bus terminal land use and Go service stand out as the important early morning topics between candidate and electorate While hes moving among the sparsely populated bus terminal before 730 am its obvious that the candidate is too late to meet the bulk of the crowd that forced him to park in the bowels of the Go terminal property His presence does have its benefits however Schoenrock a Bay view Secondary School student living north of Holland Landing just outside the riding Mr Scott hopes to represent says local newspapers have failed to provide much information on the election adding that its good to see provincial candidates come to the people When a young woman who happens to be a neigh bor of campaign manager Hunter but who hasnt decided her political preference warns the you realize of course this is normally a Conservative riding an elderly man adds his own political ob servations Not as far as Im concerned he tells Scott with a broad smile After some campaign suggestions from a terminal employee that help Mr Scott decide hell be back days only at am its off to the Aurora campaign office to restock literature before the all candidates meeting at Secondary School in southern Richmond Hill The program with candidates from York North and York Centre ridings taking part in separate IAN SCOTT Addresses meeting sessions emerges only as a twocandidate debate for York North when incumbent Bill Hodgson fails to show While the meeting produces the usual comments and questions with an equally polite response to both candidates an informal poll presented to Mr Scott later in the day gives the candidate a wide lead among the schools students Campaign organizers however stress the poll is informal and unscientific and are reluctant to release or even discuss it Back on the road by am Ian Scott becomes a teacher for the next few hours returning to Huron Heights library until pm when he heads home for a brief rest prior to a 25minute swing through two blocks of downtown Newmarket Then its back to the campaign offices for a strategy scheduling and relaxation session prior to the union meeting in Concord Organizers had hoped for a limited door knocking swing through parts of Vaughan following the meeting but jobs and job creation questions keep Mr Scott occupied until 745 pm Back at the campaign offices Mr Scott engages in campaign planning and an interview that keeps him busy until 1030 pm Around him campaign workers turn in hours equal to that of their candidate Office manager Judy Sorenson the only fulltime member of the effort worked from am to 7 pm at the outset of the campaign but extended her hours once the party moved into the telephone stage of its schedule John Hunter emphasizes that while the offices two telephones are constantly in use its outgoing calls rather than the public calling in A committee room isnt designed as much for people to call in as it is for campaign work he ex plains But realizing the public may have a need to reach the office the telephones are kept clear of out calls for 10 minutes at the top of each hour For Ian Scott however the telephones are largely handled by members of the campaign committee His role is to get out and meet people at bus stations train stations on the main street and during all candidates meetings Its all part of a strategy that makes 15hour days a normal part of the NDP election campaign MS JUNE 7 THRU SAT JUNE 11 For Those You Lovo LIVING COLOR 8x10 PORTRAIT Compare At Babies Children Adults Groups 1
