Charles St DAVID ft HASKELL TERRY CARTER Editor- ROBERT MARTIN Newt Editor Phone Aurora Time to overhaul Canadas postal system The postal service needs a complete overhaul it needs new ideas and new Mood YorkSimcoe MP Sinclair Stevens said this week in a press statement that was a biting indictment of the service We agree Something must be done The mail just isnt getting through Mail often takes 10 days or more to make the 30mile trip from Toronto Some doesnt arrive at all Morale which is always at a low ebb is deteriorating further efficiency is sinking costs are soaring points out Mr Stevens who is his partys financial critic in Parliament At the heart of the situation is the postal services everexpanding staff a situation which seems rampant throughout the federal government structure Despite the introduction of automation about people now work for the Post Office It is second only to the armed services in number of federal personnel The postal service has become a costly government white elephant which has turned a profit of a few years ago into a million an nual deficit despite the fact that both its revenue and volume are growing ROY GREEN If a private business were operated in this manner it would be bankrupt and out of business within months As the problem escalates a government which refuses to face the facts has fallen back on that old haven of bureaucrats everywhere another study To date it has commissioned studies at a cost of but because most of these painted a dismal picture of impending collapse few have been made public The Conservative financial critic sees the need for two drastic actions actions that have already been proven sound strategy in Great Britain and the United States replacement of several chiefs who are now in key positions and a move away from direct government control into private or semiprivate hands The time for a similar move in Canada is long overdue said Mr Stevens and once again we agree With a new postal strike a distinct possibility this summer a move bound to push the whole postal system deeper into the morass in which it is now struggling the time for decisive action can be put off no longer Canadians expect their mail to be delivered on time and at a reasonable cost to at philosophy I How can kids of today be expected to believe in fairy tales Our world has changed so much that it is longer proper to sit down with a group oft youngsters and drag out the storybook with tM hope that they will allow any of those stories be told without serious scrutiny fall Letters to the editor Letter illogical of a local newspaper is surely to inform people of local events report local news and comment on and regional is about as idebound as one can get As is his statement Your mandate as a suburban newspaper applies to local and regional news Where was he during these several months when as regularly as clockwork there was a letter to the editor from Scott denouncing Tory policies and promoting the cause These free blurbs ranged far beyond our regional limits As a citizen of York expect the local newspapers to keep me informed politically Municipal Provincial Federal at all times not just during election campaigns In my opinion you are doing your job You print the letters to the editor the news stories and editorial opinion Isnt that what newspapers are all about in a democracy Mi Mount Albert Scott takes stand on dumping Developments this past week have left me sad but hopeful The event I am referring to is disclosure that was given to the Con servative party by a firm wanting to dump garbage at Maple As have noted in previous letters I am opposed to further dumping of Metro Torontos garbage in this area The proposed ex tension of the facility will only despoil our area without prompting Metro to face its serious disposal problem I was saddened but not shocked to learn of the large donation to the Conservative party in Although apparently there is no direct link between the donation and the granting of a dumping permit the disclosure certainly raises doubts about the procedure I hope the judicial inquiry will clear ihe pall hanging over the issue and permit a final decision to be made on environmental grounds I also believe the inquiry should be expanded to consider firms other operation in Stouffville A thorough investigation is needed to answer the many questions which are bothering concerned residents I oppose both dumps but I believe they should be refused for en vironmental reasons not political ones I hope the taint of scandal wont mask the real and im portant issues these problems raise proper land use and en vironmental safeguards IAN SCOTT NOP Candidate York North Shopper complains of markup The East Minor Hockey Association will be staging a family hockey party at Anchor Park In Holland Landing May 28 from am to pm There will be refresh ments baseball soccer and track and field Hockey players are invited to bring their whole at Huron Heights Secondary School Newmarket May beginning at pm The evening will feature various musical groups including the schools band Tickets are available at the door While shopping recently at I was surprised to find a per cent markup including excise and customs costs on a very small article This wasnt a or 100 item that represented major work for customs people or a major threat the Canadian economy but a mere cent notebook US price that is The Item was on sale at two for and marked that in store and in an advertising flyer but when I got it home I discovered a 25 cent sticker underneath The per cent markup on 100 fiveinch by threeinch sheets seems a little much I cant see how It costs that much to bring the books across the border after all a trees a tree When I called the manager he was very polite and blamed the problem on a simple statement printed in minute type In a green blob on the bottom of the back page of flyer The statement said Certain ltemsare priced at US retail prices Due to Canadian customs and excise taxes higher Canadian retail prices are In effect The funny thing is I suspect they dont have buy the books at retail prices even from the States I dont think such a high markup is right Theyre making bucks and blaming Trudeau Shillington statement outrageous Show me proof that customs and excise cost a 100 per centplus more for each note book brought in and Id be glad to pay It HARRINGTON Niagara St Newmarket The very name Fairy stories can now be taken to mean something entirely different than what was intended when the phrase was coined- When someone says fairy today what does he mean Is it one of those ladylike creatures with a magic wand that floats about replacing teeth under pillows Or are we talking about ef feminate men I mean hows a kid to know When Mom or Dad says Who wants to hear a fairy tale the kid go and grab the latest issue of Can today s average kid swallow some of the plot lines found in our traditional fairy tales Wont a child have some doubts about a girl who calls herself Snow White Especially when he learns that Snow lives in a little house in the woods with no less than seven little men Men with names like Sneezy Grumpy Dopey and even Doc Snow White indeed jr But Snow White is a domestic you might I explain The little men go off to work each day and Snow cleans up and makes dinner The kids are bound to mention the into propriety of a livein domestic in a house with seven little men What will the townsfolk think Better she should get a room at the inn an commute work each day A When the wicked witch gets to Snow with the poisoned apple you can see the interest picking up Aha shouts one too many chemicals in the apple orchard I told you about chemicals in your food 1 suppose you could alter the tale somewhat if you had a different ending They just wont believe the prince on the white charger kissing Snow bringing her out of her spell and dashing to ny4mrmmMi Youd have to introduce bionics into the story That they can understand Maybe the six- million dollar man might rocket along and J induce bionics or laser therapy to Snow ana rehabilitate her In this television age that is a credible plot Little Red Riding Hood is another story that doe not stand the test of the litis storj becomes muddled as to hero identification Red becomes suspect for choosing to walk through the woods on her way to grandma house Kids are told today to stay away from woods Then she meets a wolf A wicked wolf we are told and she doesnt run away or scream or blow her rape whistle She actually tells him where she is going The wolf becomes somewhat of an antiherb when he ties granny up and waits for Red For his troubles he is shot by a passing hunter Of all the outrageous statements I have heard politicians make throughout the years Councillor reference to an ap pearance before the Council by the taxpayers as a privilege not a right must certainly be the epitome of arrogance or Ignorance So In the vernacular of bygone days I would like to ad- drcss Councillor Shillington thus What doth thou propose Noble Coun cillor that we the Serfs kneel upon the floor before the Royal Dais strike our bosom three limes and a humble prayer to be heard by the Lords and Masters whose wages we pay with our taxes I think thou hast the positions confused although it doth seem thou hast been appointed Speaker Overall by the Lord Mayor of the Township Burrows who Is also as thyself forget thee riot a servant of the Taxpayers which thou art all quick to point out to us at election time Dear me I think If thou keepest up thy huffing and puffing thou wilt blow thy own house down MILDRED HOLMES Sutton West Sharon church wins its battle FROM PRESENTING the of rigKter of friend of the man of guardian of common DUCK The matter between The First Church of Christ Scientist Boston Massachusetts and the Church of the Living Christ Sharon Ontario Is settled According to our request and in unequivocal terms the legal department of The Mother Church in Boston has stated a change was made In Church policy to permit anyone who has received class instruction in Christian Science to terminate his membership in the association of hfs teachers pupils End of Quote This change In policy was communicated to ail teachers and associations throughout Ike world because in past voluntary withdrawal was impossible The members of the Church of the Living Christ are now free to exercise the right Of freedom of religion and association recognized In genuine democracy They worship the one God the one Christ the one Jesus found only In The New Testament because that he A new covenant he hath made the first old Now that which and old is ready to vanish away The conviction that pure Christianity Is embodied in The New Testament only is based upon JESUS CHRISTS saying All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers but the sheep did not hear them John KOBBACHER President Zephyr For more Conservationists now tell us that the wolf not the nasty guy history and fairy tales would have us believe The poor wolf Shot for merely following a natural instinct with a girl questionable morals Kids today would boo the hunter They also think that Red was merely being coy she pretended not to notice the wolf was wear grannys nightdress What big eyes you have the kids chortle who is she Irving to kid A happier ending in the would have seen Red shoot the hunter live commonlaw with the wolf and for Parliament on a Save Our Wolves Jack and the Beanstalk has never to nay mind been a fair fairy tale 1 mean Jack did steal the goose that laid the golden eggs What the giant was a miserable old crock who ran around saying Fee fie turn It was still his golden goose and Jack just op and stole it He wouldnt have a leg to stand on in any court today Besides Jack was not brightest of boys selling a cow for a handful of beans Cinderella would not be a big hit today among children who have big feet or who are on the pudgy side Arent they entitled to prince and marry Or is that privilege extendd only to girls with small feet The Three Pigs would meet Im sure a definite attitude of serves them right cant after all just run around building houses wherever you like without a building permit No subdivision approvals no promise to build an arena or a pool in the community Todays kids would identify with the wolf who huffed puffed and blew their houses down Lowering real estate values thats what they were doing v You let one or three pigs in and the todays society Goldilocks would be a standard- bearer for the youth betrayed by our society All she wants Is a place to sleep for awhile and some food Those three bears called the cops just because she ate their porridge slept in their beds and broke the baby bears chair Big deal No the only fairy tale that has any credence today is Alice In Wonderland And the only way to make all of It understandable Is to explain that Alice had popped a few uppers before she went to Wonderland
