Bnie Era Newmarket Aurora Keswick Wed May ELECTION REPORT I Wilson campaign goes li on the issues B- CHRISTINA MONTGOMERY Era Slaff reporter NEWMARKET Jim Wilson is running a typical campaign heavy on the honesty and sincerity and very light on the issues The 42yearold pharmaceutical salesman is offering his dedication and his personality backed by a lengthy list of community achievement and is asking people to trust him to sort out the issues once he gets to Queens Park Its a difficult approach when the public has no clear idea about either the Liberal candidate or his party Youd suspect that people want more than a promise to work hard Youd think theyd ask for some stand on issues any issues But they dont Mr Wilson who claims to be more of a riding man than a party man is promoting himself as an eager alternative to PC incumbent Bill Hodgson and is basing the promotion on a doortodoor meetthepeople campaign And most of the people he talks to really arent pressing him for stands on specific issues Saturdays canvassing session in Aurora was a good example There was Elizabeth Stone who knew only that she was tired of the government tired of Bill Davis and strongly opposed to regional government There was Laurie Austin who apologized for being not much of a political person and asked Mr Wilson what it was he wanted to tell her And there was Fred Hall an Anglican priest who was the most aggressive in his questioning of the candidate Rev Hall wanted to know why Wilson is running and what can be done about the abominable bus service to Metropolitan Toronto Most of the people he meets dont have much interest in political issues and dont give a damn about the election Mr Wilson says So as he drives around in the gold Volkswagen with the big Liberal signs glued on it he tries to appeal to their concern for things like quality of life Its a vague approach that allows him to talk about strengthening small business returning to the basics in education revamping senior citizens programs and protecting the en vironment and all without offering specific solutions You have to get elected first and then you have time to sit down and study the issues Thats the way he described it to one student recently as she pressed him to take a stand on the proposed amusement park in Vaughan He wouldnt There has been some concern about specific issues nagging fears about Pickering airport development of the Yonge St strip landfill sites and the future of Highway York North Liberal candidate Jim Wilson is spending much of this campaign canvassing but finds few of the people he meets want to talk issues Above he talks to Elizabeth Store of Victoria St Aurora whom he stopped on her driveway Satur day while canvassing that town All Jim Wilson can promise them is that hell look into it Its a strategy that was approved by rookie campaign manager Paul Nelson presenting the person ability instead of the party You mention that your candidate is a resident of Newmarket minor soccer coach minor hockey house league director chairman of his parish council president of the Home and School Association founding organizer of the Arthritis Society and chairman of the group committee of Boy Scouts And you hope that the only entry on the political achievement list president of the Liberal riding association wont seem too skimpy And finally you send your candidate out on an imaginative campaign that includes standing at busy intersections and waving to people as they drive to work Or marching outside your oppositions headquarters with a high school band on a handshaking mission When thats done you sit back and hope Thats how Paul Nelson is going to spend the next 14 days VEIN On Sale A May 2528 r x 10 All Steel Storage Shed Sturdy weatherproofed
