CANADIANS AGAINST AMERICANS The Era Newmarket Aurora Keswick On 1 Wed May 25 Top amateur boxers square off Satu in pi NEWMARKET Its image of boxing as a game for pugs or thugs may get a severe jolt this Saturday when amateur boxing highlighted in a tournament at the Newmarket Arena Its billed as an in ternational tournament and will see some of the topranked amateur fighters from Ontario and the United States boxing to raise funds for the newly formed Newmarket Amateur Boxing Club impel us behind the club and this weeks amateur card is Irish Tommy Burns a former professional boxer and a man who believes boxing is an excellent way to teach discipline in young people Burns is a tough task master who demands nothing but total and complete obedience to the techniques he passes on to his charges Tor con ditioning Boxing is an art says Burns I know that but I also know I have to convince a lot of other people that its not a pugs game Thats one of the reasons for the fight card at the this card are a credit to the sport It may prove to be just that for Joe Solomon an inmate at Institution in Camp- a medium security prison Joe is a f ullb1ooded who has just over a year to serve and thinks that amateur boxing may be the stepping stone to his parole A man coming up for parole needs to be able to convince the board he has someplace to go a purpose in his life says Joe Vinkle who accompanied Solomon to a press conference here last week Vinkle a staffer often ac companies Solomon and other inmates during their oneday passes outside prison grounds We believe Joe Solomon has found that purpose says Vinkle He loves the sport and his attitudes and outlook have changed for we better He works out on the heavy bag all the time a fact much in evidence by the scar tissue on Solomons knuckles and is dedicated to improving himself Solomon is just one fighter on this Saturdays card having received a weekend pass and will probably be accompanied by Vinkle who has taken quite an interest in Solomons career Tommy Burns hopes to see money raised from the card for equipment for the boxing club and hopes to schedule a card in the future which will feature the local boys in the club I put a lot of time and effort into this says Burns and I expect the boys to do the same I have no time for smart- guys or kids who dont want to expend the effort in conditioning and discipline that is needed At the first sign of any nonsense they are out of the dub and tell everyone who enters it that I wont stand for anything but total dedication to improving themselves Burns does not recommend professional boxing for any of his charges and in spite of his years in the ranks or suggests strongly that its a sport to avoid Amateur boxing is a chance for a boy to compete on a highly personal level against someone of his own calibre Bums says and it is a great character builder Home runs give Pop Factory win over Clare s Colts in ladies league season opener NEWMARKET Pauline
