Circulation Second Class registration number Phone Newmarket 30 Charles St Editor- In- Chief ROBERT MARTIN News Editor Phone Aurora Make incur courts an issue in this election Chief Justice Willard Estey let go with some stinging words at Aurora Highlands last Wed- The overall tone of the evening was informal in fact but the chief justice did convey a grave message with a few biting words It was a simple message Ontarios court system is being shortchanged financially He didnt want to discount the other wide- ranging areas of the provincial budget but he said more public funds are needed not only to meet future growth in Ontarios courts but to bring them back to a proper level of functioning Two years to settle a routine court case is not in our view a proper level of functioning for something as important as the provinces justice system This has been experienced in Newmarket court Every accused person is guaranteed his day in court but 730 days is a bit much Nor should residents of York Region feel smug in the knowledge that construction of a new courthouse is about to begin Just because weve got the facilities doesnt mean the people will be there to man them In his speech last week Chief Justice Estey said legal aid last year assisted 300000 people who would not normally have had any representation in court That assistance wasnt matched by a growth in the courts however Weve opened the courts up but we havent increased the courts to handle the cases lamented the Chief Justice York North Progressive Conservative in cumbent Bill Hodgson has hinted that should his party be reelected there will likely be a better deal in store for the judicial system in this province Lets not forget however that its a Con servative government that created the present court network with both strong and un derfinanced points The solution then is to apply pressure not only to whichever party is elected June 9 but to the candidates as they meet the people now Lets stop playing dollar games in an area thats as crucial as this one By a- ROY GREEN Batting tit i no for out-of- but eager guy The Bluejays will just have to do without me this season For any season as Ive decided to become a holdout Well not actually a holdout I just refuse to play In an organized league I now play for what may be the worst team in all of Softball I dont think Im being unfair to my team mates because I may be the worst player on the team and the cause of them being the worst team The year started out with great promise when I went for with the team in the town league which has won the title for the last two years Motors is apparently the Montreal of the Newmarket George Haskett Mens Softball League There I was on a cold Sunday morning a few weeks back swinging a bat and pushing up my Bluejays hat which keeps falling down over my face We had come out for a practice and instead become embroiled in an exhibition contest with antoher team in the league I Greensweater turns thoughts gloomy By Penny van Everdingen I saw him again After our brief stay in Holland Landing I had all but forgotten Mr Greensweater or thought him dead Usually attired appropriately for his activity in a green sweater he walks the side of the roads in and around the Landing picking up bottles and debris I dont know why and I dont know what he does with it all When blown debris litters fences and Mall shoppers standing not five feet from a litterbox scatter their garbage to the winds Mr Geen- sweater is a nice sight Nice old quaint seemingly battling a one man war against Jit terbugs For all I know he may be a dozen nasty things but I feel not Maybe he likes clean dit ches Possibly he gains taxfree income from bottle returns If this is the case our sloppy society does some unintentional good Once in a rare fit of reality I realized that if I didnt throw my Oh Henry wrapper out the car window onto Be man Dr I was depriving someone of a job So out the window it went If it costs us thousands of dollars to clean up lot of that goes to wages right Penny van Everdingen 4 is a Newmarket freelance writer Old habits die hard however and the car floor once again became the rubbish bin I wonder if that is right though If all the people on welfare got jobs the case workers and their supporting bureaucracy would then be unemployed If people stopped stealing assaulting murdering conning and prostituting would Crawford and Company resort to criminal ac tivity as policemen become redundant and have no other training Think of the unemployment checkeruppers If no one cheated the what would they do Draw and moonlight as legmen for private detectives Dont forget the folks at the Childrens Aid Society If people quit abusing and abandoning their children forget the new Yonge St building The CAS staff could twiddle their thumbs in the old office I wonder if the pill and single girls keeping their babies struck fear into the hearts of caseworkers Their budget is low We like to let the kids grow up and later pay thousands annually to keep them in jail After all what would we do with unneeded jail guards if prevention rather than punishment were employed Hundreds of teachers are unemployed We bought the myth that a BA is better illboard Billboard is provided by Hie Era as an outlet for service clubs youth groups special Interest groups charitable organizations and many others to get their message about activities into the community And best of all Its free of charge Just give us a call at between 9 am and pm or after hours phone A police dog demonstration Torontobased group of native children who will perform traditional Indian music and dance Passports are available on the grounds costing for adults and cents for students and children fortunately the Conservatives forget to mention we had eventually to pay for that much unrelatedtoteaching education Stuart Smith wants to cut out educational frills like teachers Stephen Lewis wisely ignores the issue and walks his red herring through the forests of Northern Ontario about which the average man cares not as long as he can build his house or patio deck NOW Good grief If we werent so rotten how the unemployment rate would climb into orbit Seasonally adjusted or not Does that mean those who are working but shouldnt or those who arent but should Its scary to think that one way of increasing employment is for us all to become unemployed drunken childbeating criminal derelict thereby employing others to look after spy upon and arrest us Its a bad old world but hope rises at the sight of Mr Greensweater Hes out of the mainstream of the employed or the social ser vices sauntering through our dirty ditches clearing up at least some of our clutter I dont know his name and Im not sure I want to find out about him When Im indulging a romantic fantasy I dont want to be brought down to earth by facts Letters to the editor I The Newmarket Historical Committee will meet May at pm and my sister are attempting to contact persons who suffer from Myasthenia Gravis This disease until quite recently was a very rare muscular disease Recent figures estimate approximately sufferers in Canada alone and 10 times that many in the US It strikes anyone at any age and affects sexes This disease received some publicity a few years ago when it was revealed that Aristotle Onassis was dying and that he suffered from this disease Many cases of Myasthenia Gravis go undiagnosed for years and numerous cases are difficult to diagnos as Ihe symptoms are so varying This disease can be controlled in most cases with proper drug therapy although there are many severe cases This is a very baffling and unpredictable disease as a person can be fine one moment and even though they are taking their prescribed drugs they are suddenly unable to do the simplest things such as sit up walk or even talk Often the respiratory system is affected which causes breathing difficulty A sufferer can also go into a crises from a drug overdose as alt patients differ in the quantity and type of drugs best suited to their case Some sufferers of this disease have never heard of it before it struck them and they are therefore very alone with the problems of handling their disease They find that family and friends do not realise the seriousness of the disease and many are thought to be constant complainera lazy and sometimes accused to being alcoholic because of sudden weakness in their legs We have found with our monthly social meetings that these people are anxious to meet others with similar problems and that there is a great need for publicity to enlighten patients friends relatives doctors and the general public- In Oct we ap proached the Muscular Dystrophy Association and they have been a great help We are operating as a division of their Toronto Chapter They are supplying our patients with free tran sportation to Myasthenia Gravis related doctor appointments and social events They also invite all our patients to their social events We are permitted to use their office and mailing facilities This has been very beneficial to us but we are still on our own as far as publicity goes and this is where we need your help We now have ap proximately mem bers but we know there are hundreds more the Toronto and surrounding area These are the people we need to reach The only other Myasthenia Gravis chapter In Canada Is In Vancouver Would you be so kind as to announce our next meeting rough draft enclosed as we would appreciate any publicity we can get at this time We feel that through you we are sure to reach many sufferers of this disease who are unaware of our existence and of the help available to them through our organization LINDA MRS Toronto These guys will probably provide the toughest competition well face all season one Pfaff team mate told me Theyve got great pitching and they all hit well I jogged out to right field to take my place for the first inning I spent a lot of time in right field as a youngster and it was not because of my booming hitting prowess In the big leagues all the fielders are power hitters Mantle Mays In kids ball the fielders are often the worst players least it was when 1 was a kid 5 Right field signified the worst hitter and player of them all The chances of having to catch a fly were somewhat slimmer than in left or centre field Also because we used the rotation order in batting the right fielder was the last man to hit and in a short game or rain out often didnt even get to bat On all the teams I played on in kids ball I was the right fielder Once is my early teens I organized my own team in a junior house league where I lived I asked all my buddies good Softball players all to play for me and they did I installed myself at first base I made up the lineups found the sponsor and played first base Soon my buddies told me they could sign a super who could hit anything never made an error and would guarantee us the championship He was a first baseman He signed with my team We won the championship and I played manager Only nobody listened to me When I told them to steal a base they ignored me Then they stole when I cautioned them to wait So here I was playing right field for Pfaff Motors and out from home plate come a short pop up I dashed in stumbled my hat fall down over my face and I just barely managed to hang on to the routine fly Between innings the Pfaff manager asked me what positions if any I had ever played First base I told him and there I was next inning I think I only dropped two balls during my inning at that position Then I went up to hit Three zingers came down the pipe one after another and I knew that I couldnt get the bat around soon enough on any of them They were having such a good time that they decided to let me stay up there until I got a hit Nine pitches later on a lob pitch I hit a feeble squibbler into the wrong field Because I had swing late The Pfaff manager asked me if had ever coached or managed I told him about my championship season as a manager and he asked me stand on the sidelines and act like a manager for a while The game ended due to cold weather shortly thereafter and I never learned whether I managed to look like Casey Stengel or Leo I didnt even have a stick of gum much less a plug of tobacco but I kicked the dirt a lot and kept touching my sweater and my hat like I was giving signals The next day my arms and legs were sore and I felt as though Id been playing football against the Oakland Raiders I decided to leave organized ball forever Hang up the old spikes Turn the ball glove over to the hall of fame look for a job as a colour commentator oh big league games Just like Early Wynn Joe Tony Kubek And until one of those jobs materializes I have decied to keep my name alive by playing in fun games with the guys from Cable TV They dont play in an organized league They just get together like those guys in the beer commercial and play anyone who will play them Usually its a guvs from the Bell Telephone or sometimes the ambulance drivers We have only one ball and I think we lost it in our game to the Bell last week The Bell team has a bunch of bats and lots of balls and they are angry because we only bring one ball and they have to use all of theirs When the game was called last week Bell had more than runs and we had less than ten We got four runs from Dave who hit a little popup and the Bell fielder fell down giving Dave a grandslam homer Dave is this weeks that kind of chance do you think Id chuck it all up If wants me back Or if the Bluejays call No Im content to wind up the career with the worst Mam in ilf injjiir
